Another sub question?

Those that have sub experience. Do subs follow each other that closely in live maneuvers and combat situations? When the October pulled a Crazy Ivan the Dallas had to go silent and drift. The sonar operator was explaining that they had to be careful not to drift into the back of the other sub. Do they really tail each other that closely to where that is a real world possibility or was that just for TV? If a sub is tailing another what is a realistic distance they'd follow from?

That's mostly Hollywood and it would be a serious violation of safety protocols. With that said, submarine people are insane. they crash into other submarines and ships all the time. I guess they figure oh well we got two hulls, what the heck we will be okay go ahead and hit him!

They do not follow that close or get close to the ocean bottom as shown in cinema. The typical trailing distance is several thousand yards.
