3/10. Here's why:

My rule is to give a movie 20 minutes to see if it can hook me in. If I notice early on that it's a slow movie, I'm willing it to give it an hour (as long as the running time is at least 2 hours long). It took 90 minutes for THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER to do that. And it's not something personal, because the movie only tries to be suspenseful a few times. I don't mean just with action sequences; conversations can also be suspenseful. The problem with Alec Baldwin's performance is that he always feels like he's acting, you know what I mean? Not to mention that JACK RYAN comes off as an unmemorable character, which didn't give me hope because I knew I was about to watch 4 more movies about him.

Any thoughts?

reply

To each his own. What hooks you may not hook others, and vice versa. for instance, I can skip "action" films - I get bored. I like this film, but it's not one I repeatedly watch.

reply

Any thoughts?

Yea. Don't try to lure me to your private film blog by slagging off a great film people likely only come here to discuss favourably. By all means slag the film off, but don't use your negative comments to lure me away. If I want to watch someone insult a great movie I'll stay right here where the crazies are concentrated and I know their names.

reply

I'm not slagging off; I'm expressing my view on a movie I didn't like. There's a difference. And if I was luring you, I wouldn't have posted the comment here.

reply

".. people likely only come here to discuss favourably"

What?

Where did you get that idea? Is it even DISCUSSION, if it's limited to 'being favourable'? Isn't it just buttocks-licking and kissing praising at that point?

There's no such thing as 'great film'. There are only faulty movies that have nonsensical bits and plotholes about them, some of which may be entertaining. That's all. You may THINK this is a 'great film', but then you don't allow any other viewpoints or anyone else's opinion to exist.

That's close-minded of you, and to have an actual conversation or discussion, you have to open your mind a bit more than that.

I NEVER come to any forum to 'discuss favourably' (what does this even mean, where did you hear this, who told you that, and is THAT what you think discussion is??), I always come to point out things, plotholes, mistakes, goofs, errors, stupidities, nonsensical things or just express my observations, thoughts, ideas and sometimes even about how to make it better.

As Cinemasins often points out, there is no 'perfect movie' - and just as the old saying goes, there are no traumatic experiences, only traumatized reactions (or something like that), there are no great movies, only unreasonable, narrow-minded praise-reactions to movies.

You're in the minority. It's your opinion but you aren't going to find very many who share it.

I know. That's kind of what forums are about, right?

reply

"You're in the minority."

So, you think majority should dictate how things are? Isn't that a bit .. I don't know.. RACIST of you?

reply

My thoughts are you wanted it to be action packed, but that isn't the type of movie this is. It does have some action, but it is a suspense movie. It continuously builds. What is Ramius doing? Is he going to launch? Is he going to defect? Can Ryan get to him in time?

The movie builds up perfectly and is what the other movies fail to get - it isn't about the action.

JACK RYAN comes off as an unmemorable character

Exactly! He's not James Bond like the producers of the other movies want show him as. He's a historian. A teacher. An analyst. He wants to work behind the scenes. He has no interest in being out in the field, but steps up to do it because no one else will or can.

reply

What are you talking about? I said:

Did I say he was unmemorable for not being an action hero?

reply

It was a suspense movie regardless of what you think.

Did I say he was unmemorable for not being an action hero?

He's unmemorable because he's unmemorable. That is how he's supposed to be.

Have you read any of Clancy's novels about Jack Ryan? If so, then you'll know that this movie is the ONLY one that came close to capturing the tone Clancy set.

reply

Do you not know what "unmemorable" means? And do you not know the difference between "suspense movie" and suspenseful movie"?

reply

I think you should stick to what you like because so far ive seen you bash this for unscrupulous reasons as well as Black Hawk Down...

Im not sure anything military based or with more emphasis on realism is something you shouldnt bother with... They dont seem to be your cup of tea.. And i believe thats because you dont possess the critical thinkig skills or attention span to enjoy these types of films...

That or youre making purposely polarizing critiques to get a reaction

I'll take the "or youre making purposely polarizing critiques to get a reaction" for $200, Alex.

reply

I hate people like that... This movie is amazing as is BHD... Anyone claiming its "boring" or not hinged in reality or un-suspenseful is lying through his teeth or is a twit with zero attention span.. I don't like to be an *beep* and judge others based off film tastes.. but be TRUTHFUL in your attempt to criticize a film...

BTW ive seen you around CGSailor I agree with mostly everything you say on these boards and I enjoy reading your factual and technical information you post..

I also appreciate your service greatly

reply

Yeah, There's definitely a difference between honest critique and saying sh!t just to piss people off.

Like someone going to Gravity, and claiming the CGI sucks.
Say wht you will about the simple plot, or the serious goofs with orbital mechanics, etc... but to claim the CGI is horrible... is a deliberate troll or the poster is an idiot.

And thanks for the Appreciation. I love technical posts and discussions.

I also cannot stand Trolls, the willfully ignorant (as opposed to someone simply not knowing) and Conspiracy types.
So much so that I often get accused by others of being like vits, a troll. So it's nice to be appreciated.

That's not a good comparison. Aside from the fact that I loved GRAVITY, I didn't say anything like that in regards to this movie.
I often get accused by others of being like vits, a troll.

What a coincidence. You talk to me like a troll and you accuse me of being one.

Bad spelling is another sign of being a troll. What's interesting is that you were writing correctly until I unmasked you.

reply

You didn't unmask anything.

And my spelling is perfectly fine.
I am an excellent speller.
What I have never claimed to be however, is an excellent typist, especially on a tiny touchscreen smartphone.

Please learn the difference between being a bad speller, and typos... before the next time you attack someone.
You are a fΓΌcking troll, because you came here to insult the film then expected fans of the show to go to your website to recieve more bs insults.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

reply

1) I write on my phone too and I haven't made any mistakes. That's no excuse.
2) Before the next time you attack someone, be prepared for the other person to fight back. Specially when you're the one who started it.
3) What are you talking about? This is a forum. People come here to say their opinion (positive or negative) on a film. Having a negative one isn't the same thing as an insult. Learning that difference is much more important than the difference between bad spelling and typos because, if you don't know it, you'll have trouble outside of the Internet as well.
4) My website has other negative opinions, but positive as well. Clicking on the link is optional, so you don't have to do it if you don't like my way of commenting.

Add me to your ignore list if you want; it's not going to change your attitude problem, which I hope you don't also have in real life.

reply

Well, I hate people that can't deal with the fact that someone has a different opinion to the point where they come up with excuses and/or theories. "Oh, you don't like the movie? It's because of your age/You have something personal against the director/You're judging it as a deep drama instead of a dumb comedy/etc." I also hate users who claim to hate trolls yet act as them. If you've really read my posts in other boards, you'll see with how many trolls I have to deal with. I mean, it's fine if you disagree with me, but you don't have to insult me for it.

reply

How can I be a troll? I give my objective thoughts (some more detailed than others) rather than insulting. I post positive commments too.

reply

So, someone is a 'troll' just because their opinion doesn't conform to the unwashed masses' uncritical praise of something?

Are these movies golden cows that are FORBIDDEN to be honestly and openly critiqued?

Every movie has flaws, get over it. This is not a great movie by any means, but at least it doesn't have injected romance.

The movie is too long, too boring, it has too much talking, it's very slow-paced, so you can only enjoy it if your boredom-tolerance is very high. I don't see how any normal people could sit through this without wanting to start doing something else when the useless craptalk just continues.

For example, what's the point of the 'Pavarotti vs. Paganini'-story, HOW could anyone confuse the two, and why don't we even get to HEAR the full story? It's a USELESS WASTE OF TIME, and people on these forums have a perfect right to call it as such.

Not everyone HAS to conform to some ideal, no matter HOw great you think some boring movie with no point is.

I mean, the story happens in the ocean, so the visuals are boring, blurry and 'muddy' at best (no great locations), and WHAT actually happens looks like it's based on some stupid clancy novel, so you know you are not going to get anything interesting. What it really amounts to is just some tiny vessels moving about and then it ends. Some people die, like in many movies.

When you look at it from a cosmic perspective, it's barely an event - 100 000 people die of starvation every day, but we're supposed to care about some aging traitor warmonger captain of a murder-boat that can stay under the surface for a long time. When you really think about it, this movie is uninteresting in all levels, it's boring waste of time instead of entertainment, and it definitly doesn't offer any escapism factor to a better and more interesting world.

Where's the grand scheme? Where are the more cosmic things? Where is the meaning? For most people of the world, nothing happened.

reply

I mean, when Sean Connery was sweating and talking fake russian in some metal tube supposedly in the ocean, people went on with their day without even knowing about it. If something is not affected by most people, it's really a non-event.

So what we get is some story about politics and boredom that doesn't lead to anything. The world doesn't change, people's minds don't change. Heck, Rocky IV was more poignant than this, at least it gave hope that things can change.

This movie's message is.. it's good to be a traitor?

I don't mind if you think this movie is great, but don't come to a DISCUSSION board to try to shut down DISCUSSION when you don't like it, don't come to tell me I am not ALLOWED a different viewpoint than yours, or that no one is allowed to look at a movie from a different perspective than your fanboy one that sees no fault.

Connery has certainly been in better movies than this. Entrapment might be silly, but at least it's entertaining and goes from a place to another (although even it doesn't really resolve much, and much doesn't truly happen ultimately, it's at least more interesting and more multi-level story than this plodding-in-one-direction one with Alec Baldwin of all things.

And WHO the !@%%&#* wrote that 'air hostess' scene where the dominatrix on the plane should've been fired IMMEDIATELY after not knowing what turbulence is, starting fights with a customer and trying to dictate they should SLEEP although the customer clearly even kindly said that he CAN'T sleep on a plane, and not letting the customer make their own choices... that scene probably doesn't even bother you, which only proves how brainwashed you are.

Brainwashed people shouldn't be trusted on their opinions on movies, but what really takes the cake is trying to SUPPRESS any non-brainwashed people from voicing their COMPLETELY LEGITIMATE criticisms and opinions.

Everyone has their opinion, you can't dictate what other people's opinions should be.

reply

I think you should stick to what you like

I don't understand. Do you mean I should only watch movies that I like? How can I know if I like them without seeing them?
Im not sure anything military based or with more emphasis on realism is something you shouldnt bother with... They dont seem to be your cup of tea

Would you like me to tell you the war movies I've liked?
That or youre making purposely polarizing critiques to get a reaction

Really? Those are the only possibilities? A person is obliged to like this movie?

reply

Well clearly you don't like any war films or any films with realistic conotations to them as is evident on by your posting history.. your being purposely obtuse.. I guess playing stupid comes natural to you

Its funny how you over generalize everything in the extreme.. because I called you out on an obvious fact based upon YOUR OWN POST you cry about some nonsense about having to be obliged to like a movie.. No moron if you cant give factual criticism then expect to have your opinion laughed at and ignored... You cant run around IRL making idiotic polarizing comments and expect to be taken seriously

to claim the dumb *beep* you have about this and BHD tells me.. YOU HAVE A CHILD LIKE MENTALTIY when it comes to being entertained..

so basically a child is telling us why he didn't like a movie... good for you, now have a lunchables and stfu adults are talking here

PS. I don't know why I'm even bothering to reply to you as youre a troll looking for attention..

reply

Hmmm... Just like CGSailor, your spelling got worse right after I unmasked you as a troll.

Well clearly you don't like any war films or any films with realistic conotations to them as is evident on by your posting history.

Again, would you like me to tell you which war films I've liked?
if you cant give factual criticism then expect to have your opinion laughed at and ignored...

Considering that I was commenting on this movie instead of reviewing it, I think that I wrote was valid. I've learned from reading/watching other critics. If you don't agree with the way I do it and/or if you don't agree with my opinion, that's fine. If you can't do it without insulting (which is very immature), then expect to be laughed at and ignored.
I don't know why I'm even bothering to reply to you as youre a troll looking for attention...

Funny. I was asking myself the same thing. To answer your question, it's because you know who the troll here really is.

reply

Go ahead and list the war movies you like.. not like it matters whatsoever ive already ready your worthless criticisms on this and BHD... but sure go ahead and tell me what war films you like...

LOL you unmasked me as a troll? LOLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL LMNFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

You really are stupid af.. I commented on your idiotic post and all you can come up with is "your spelling got bad after I unmasked you as a troll"

LOL when and where did you do that?

I guess if were just gonna randomly say things and cast aspersions I can go ahead and say you need to stop PMing me asking for dick pics.. since its about as relevant as the dumb nonsense youre trying to say

I'm not the idiot coming onto a popular message board for a popular movie to give a BS review in order to get people to look at my *beep* ass blog.. so yes you are a troll... and you are also worthless.. I look forward to another mentally retarded rebuttle from you

and sorry but people like you, trolls who only look to stir the pot cuz they have no lives and seek attention from anywhere they can get it do not deserve to be spoken to with respect as youre not here for that.. so nice try deflecting youre *beep* now *beep* off junior Sailor was 100% spot on when he called you out

reply

Go ahead and list the war movies you like.. not like it matters whatsoever ive already ready your worthless criticisms on this and BHD...

Because when a person has a certain opinion on 2 movies of the same genre it means that they'll have the same opinion with all of them?
when and where did you do that?

Sorry. For some reason I remembered telling you the same thing I told CGSailor. Not that you aren't clearly a troll; you are.
I'm not the idiot coming onto a popular message board for a popular movie to give a BS review in order to get people to look at my *beep* ass blog

If that was my intention, then why did I post the comment instead of just the link?
sorry but people like you, trolls who only look to stir the pot

People who express their negative opinion of a movie in its forum are stiring the pot? It's not to discuss different points of view amicably? Geez...

reply

Could we stop with the 'troll' stuff? First of all, 'trolling' refers to FISHING, not some creature. It's just unfortunate that a creature with the name 'troll' exists in fantasy, so stupid people got them confused.

What kind of sense does it make for someone to _BE_ a troll? Why not orc or kappa? Why not a swamp monster or a zombie?

Trolling for reactions - that's what it meant. Fishing for reactions by throwing a bait, being SUCH an unreasonable, shocking comment that some people are BOUND to comment angrily. And that's your fish, that's your loot.

Therefore, it's a 'troller'.

I think those are RARE anyway, I think people just use the label and insult 'troll' to DISMISS any legitimate criticism of things they don't want to be criticized and so on. They SO easily call each other 'trolls', that the word doesn't even have any meaning anymore. Not that it should have anyway, because as I explained, it's not a 'troll', it's 'trolling for reactions'.

So although you are presenting a fair point in a logical and good manner, while the other side is just lashing out and tryign to get you to conform to some kind of ideal where you just HAVE to like certain movies, and if you don't, they feel free to bash you, I don't think almost ANYONE is _really_ trolling, people just use that word to feel superior, because it's an easy insult to use.

Oh, you're not REALLY voicing your ACTUAL opinion, you're just trying to fish for rections? Therefore, nothing you write is of any value, and it not being real, has no legitimacy, either.

That's basically what anyone using that word to label others is trying to do.

So please, stop doing it, it's childish and easy insult. Try to rather just attack the POINTS they're making, WHAT they're saying rather than the individual.

I try to do that, too, but I have to admit that sometimes people are just SO ridiculous, I have to sort of call them out on it and may have lashed out a bit against themselves instead of just their comment.
