Christmas Tradition..

Do any of you on here watch Home Alone and Home alone 2 as your Christmas tradition?

reply

I have a handful of Christmas movies that I consider to be treasured classics, and Home Alone is one of them. I don't necessarily get back to it every Christmas season but it at least gets a watch every two or three years.

It's basically a B-level Christmas movie for me. That is, I love it, but it's not one of my very, very favorites.

A-level would be like Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story and the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol.

No Lethal Weapon, Diehard or Rambo for you then?

What about Gremlins?

reply

Oh man, I guess I'm going to have to have THIS conversation again.

Just because a movie takes place during Christmas does not make it a Christmas movie.

Die Hard is an action movie about some thieves who have taken a bunch of people hostage that is dropped into a Christmas setting. That does not make it a Christmas movie.

What makes a film a Christmas movie then? 🤔

reply

A film that's really about Christmas and about the kinds of things Christmas is associated with.

A Christmas Carol (in all it's forms) is a Christmas movie because it is about a man who learns about charity and gooodwill toward men on one fateful Christmas Eve night.

Christmas Vacation is a Christmas movie because it's about a family that gets together to celebrate the holidays, learning lessons about the value of family and the joy of the season in the process.

Elf is a Christmas movie because it's . . . well I mean, c'mon, I really hope I don't have to explain why Elf is a Christmas movie.

Here's an exercise you can use:

Let's imagine you worked at a video store and there was a Christmas section. If you would file a movie into any other section, then it's not really a Christmas movie.

To go back to Die Hard, if you had to choose, would you file Die Hard under Christmas or Action?

I mean, after all nothing says "Christmas" like explosions and deaths-by-machine gun!

reply

I would say my favourite "Christmas movie" would be Trading Places as it is set over those holidays.

That said, it has little to do with Christmas and so I'm not sure whether it falls into your category as being filed under the Christmas section in your ancient video store.
