Marley's Character Is A Human Plothole Machine

His existence in this movie, while needed to save Kevin in the end, really creates a lot of issues in this movie:

1) He's the only guy in the neighborhood who isnt away for Christmas, but is never mentioned by the Wet Bandits as being home. They never acknowledge his existence, they freely roam around the neighborhood robbing at will, never once worrying about him being home the whole time.

2) He's literally the McAllister's next door neighbor, and the only guy home for Christmas, and yet they never once bother to call him about Kevin. Instead, they keep calling the neighbor across the street, who they knew was going to Florida.

3) Despite regularly salting sidewalks at night, and just generally being around outside, Marley never notices the Wet Bandits robbing houses one after another.

4) Despite seeing Kevin all over town by himself, and clearly seeing nobody else is home next door, Marley never does anything about Kevin being home alone.

5) Even when Marley finally sees the Wet Bandits chasing Kevin, and eventually follows them across the street, and narrowly saves Kevins life by attacking the Wet Bandits, Marley just takes Kevin home and leaves him alone for yet another night! WTF!? Did he just drop the kid at the door and take off?

I understand why a character like Marley is in the movie, but man, his existence really does strain the credibility of the story. Its almost impossible for him to exist on that street and not have intervened at some point earlier in the movie.

Stop giving him a hard time, he was locked up in Alcatraz for years so give him a break.

Marley was a OSS/CIA assassin.

great points.
it almost seems like he was a ghost that the wet bandits could not * see *
until he materialized near the end for the deus-ex-machina

it would've been cool if Kevin said "old man Marley saved me" and the dumbass parents reply "he has been dead for years, sweetie.."
aaaaaaaaaah

yes ! ^

But this isnt the sixth sense.

I like the idea though

reply

true but the movie does support the supernatural.
Kevin's wish came true, the power went out with a mysterious gust of wind etc.

reply

I like this. It's part of my head canon now:)

Great observations. It's a huge plot hole.

He's an angel and got his wings after he gave Kevin some words of wisdom. Obviously no one else can see him.

Wow, well thought out here. Very nice. All great points.

Im very skeptical of things in movies and ive noticed some of those you mentioned, but not nearly as thought out as you. Maybe because i watched it alot as a kid. And the few times I've seen as an adult i just didnt care and just watch film at face value. I've noticed this being more regular to movies i grew up watching vs 1st time movies watched as an adult.

Only the last point is problematic to explain, and for all we know, Kevin told Marley his parents were on their way home and he would be fine for an hour or so.

The big one he missed (and which still should be ignored anyway because it's a freaking movie) is that all those high end homes Marv and Harry were robbing apparently had no working security systems - something they most certainly would have in 1990. We built our home in 1993 and I installed glass break detectors for the basement slider, motion detectors for the travel areas on both upper floors, door switches and window screens for the first floor, and every house in our neighborhood except one had a security system installed.
