Inspired by Alita?

I must admit, I haven't watched this movie yet, but it's airing on Showtime soon. I have, however, seen two trailers.

Anyway, the first thing I noticed was the yellow, but although, gritty post-apocalypic setting. Then, the basic story, with the opening. A man finding a (killer) robot head in a desert-like mechanical graveyard, and bringing it back.

Anybody here who have read the Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita manga or seen the anime, surely must have noticed the likeness?

And now when you have actually seen the movie do you agree?

reply

Agree? Well... The opening bared a strong resemblance to the opening in the short Gunnm anime. The post apocalyptic setting with a desert-like city, large factories everywhere etc. was all very much like the anime. Also, the scavengers, searching for parts, all fit in, and a humanoid head of a killer robot was found. However, after the 10-15 first minutes, it turned into a sci-fi horror movie. Still, I have to say that it still reminds me of Gunnm. It has the same feel.

I mostly enjoyed the movie, and wouldn't mind watching it again. It wasn't too original, but the setting saved it. I have also read that is is indeed based on a comic, but not which one. Gunnm seems like a possible source of inspiration, at least. Other members, please share your views on this too.

Edit: After some more research, I found out that Hardware was based on a 7-page story from the early eighties featured in 2000AD. The Gunnm anime is from 1993, so inspiration the other way, perhaps? Still, the manga is older than that.

Yes the seven page story originally appeared in the cominc 2000AD as one of "thargs future shock stories" - The film is very very close to the original comic story
