German R2 'Red Edition'

I bought this as so many people have said it is uncut, and it's not!

There are numerous cuts to the film, including where the fat neighbour has his eyes gouged out, and where Dylan cuts his wrists in his hallucianagnic dream to name but two. The sequences are available as 'additional scenes', but are NOT in the cut of the film on this disc!

The only thing that I can think is that this version is some kind of 'R' rated cut from the States, therefore American fans think it's uncut, but inactual fact it's not. The version released in the UK, passed uncut at 18 cert contains all of the sequences removed on this red edition DVD in the film itself. I think I'm gonna have to get an old VHS copy to tide me over till the director's edition comes out. Can't stand watching butchered horror flicks!

Avoid the red edition, it's currently being used as a coaster on my coffee table.

Ha! I just bought this POS and the PQ is worse than my VHS copy. So much for thinking I was upgrading!

Edit: You're wrong about it not being uncut though. Those weird Germans have included the scenes that used to be cut as extras even though they are in the film. heh

Hmm... This all seems rather strange. MY 'Red Edition' is fine. The picture quality isn't great & as it's German, the menu are in German, but doesn't take a genius to work out what's what. Other than that, this cut is the same as the original Palace video that came out in the UK. I had an ex rental one that for some reason HMV occasionally got their hands on and sold.

The strange thing with this DVD is the fact that there is a deleted/additional scene section but the scenes contained within ARE actually in the film. Maybe you didn't actually watch it, but the eye gouging, wrist slashing, insect nibbling/crawling over the wound & automatic door chopping are all in there. I definitely would not have got rid of my video version unless I was certain I wasn't missing out on a thing. I'm occasionally quite particular about that kind of thing.

The only thing I can think is the original German edit of this film, may have been a gore free zone, similar to the initial region 2 Predator DVD that was from a German TV version which was definitely toned down. They may have put these scenes in a seperate section too just to show what had been changed.

I'd suggest that anyone who was desperate to get this fairly soon, to go for it. It is usually under it's European name of 'M.A.R.K 13 - Hardware' (or without the full stops in between).

checkin on DVD compare there are two versions of the RED edition, one uncut international release, one R-rated theatrical. Muggins got the cut one.. whoopee... so just be careful if you buy it, check on DVDcompare forum, there's a useful comparison to identify which version is which.
Or do what I'm doin, and wait for the official release later in the year

odd, mine seems to be fine too luckely. and I think the picture quality isn't bad and the fact that it's not perfect actually helps the film I think. but is there an official release coming? like the dustDevil thing, that would be great

I just saw the Red Edition... It has both of the scenes you mentioned in it... cut into the film.

One thing nobody has mentioned about the stuff in this version is that it also has a hole different rhythm and ending for the "Stabat Mater" sequence with Mo's dying trip - the bit with him and Jill, and Mo "going nowhere", with BOTH hands intact - I've been obsessed with this movie in general and that sequence in particular since I saw it in 1990, and it was pretty amazing to have a certain emotional T crossed & I dotted after all these years. It's FAR from a perfect release - this lil' firecracker is in MAJOR need of a special edition, ala what they did with Richard Stanley's second film, DUST DEVIL. But still...if you're a fan of HARDWARE, the "Red Edition" is mandatory 'til we get something better.

I must add, on a purely personal note, that I received the DVD from none other than Richard Stanley himself, who is even cooler in real-life than you might imagine him to be! :-)

I hear ya. I just got mine YESTERDAY and saw it for the first time in a long time last night. The deleted scenes were nothing new and I was kind of...well, not pissed but I'll tell you, I've had worse things happen. Uncut, the seller's ass. Screw him or her, and his or her family. Still, I'm glad I got the DVD. I hope some legal company upgrades it. It was nice to see Stacey Travis as Jill. She always looked good barefoot.
