There is a reason why this is the absolute worst film of the 90's

Reason one.

This film was super hyped. At every commercial break this film was compares to being better than aliens and better than the terminator. This advertisement misled the american populace. In 1990, people still had faith that hollywood was going to ddeliver summer blockbusters. Then they rolled this baked turkey out and almost completely destoryed the last one hundred years of film making (terminator 2 restored people's faith).

The second reason this film is bad is that it's the script and everything else in it is all out of pace with the rest of the film.

Hardware is a cult classic.

Out of the two comments posted on this thread, the one I agree more with is...

I fail to see how an ad campaign (which are notoriously misleading and bad for ALL films) could affect a mediocre movie.

hey I actually think it is better then Terminator and Aliens :D But I guess I know what you mean, not with this movie but with what I experienced with The Dark Knight

I think the OP may well be the worst and most over-hyped human being of all time.

Guy, film studios NEED to promote films in order to get people interested in seeing them! DUH!

The point wasn't that they promoted the film it was that they lied to the public to entice them to see the movie. I didn't see any of the promos for it back in the day, so I can't comment on this one in specific. Its more and more common for them to mislead audiences in the trailers now, which is hurting theater attendance as people are learning not to trust previews.

A classic example of this garbage was Rushmore. The trailers touted it as a comedy that centered around a prank war between Bill Murray (remember before this movie he was actually considered funny) and Jason Schwartzman in order to win the affections of a woman.

They continued to lie to everyone for Royal Tenenbaums. After that one people got the hint that you either love Wes Anderson or you want to beat him to death with a white hot poker. Either way, his movies are not the light hearted comedy romps that the trailers suggest.

Promote your film. Try to get people to see it. But don't tell them to expect one thing and deliver another. You'll just piss people off and ruin the credibility of everyone involved.

Another example being the DVD cover of Equilibrium. Excellent movie. Having it say "FORGET THE MATRIX!" on the cover was just plain stupid and misleading.

If this was mass-marketed in the US then that was a pretty dumb move.

Well, that's the Weinsteins for ya... They did the same thing with Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, utilizing a deliberately misleading trailer. (In IB's case, selling it as an action movie.)

You don't get out very much, do you?

Hundreds of movies are made every year. HUNDREDS. And of those, most people only hear of a few dozen of them. Hardware is not even close to being the worst movie of 1990. Not even in the ten worst sci-fi movies of 1990. Unless of course, one is either: 1. over reacting, or 2. hasn't seen many other movies.

Any hype is not perpetrated by the film makers. Your main criticism is that the movie was not a "summer blockbuster"? Are most blockbusters quality movies? Why isn't every other not-a-blockbuster of the 90's just as bad?

The script, and everything else (huh?), is out of pace with the rest of the film? It might not be the best thing either of us has ever seen, but Hardware was tight as a drum. It was a well-thought out exercise where no details nor frames were wasted on extraneous BS. And it was technically very well done. The locations, the sets, the lighting, the photography, the editing... were far beyond typical b-movie standard, even for today. If you don't like it, fine. If you are on a soap box claiming that it destroyed 100 years of film making and cheated the entire population of the US, then I'd say you are being melodramatic, and trying to subject yourself to ridicule.

There is no way that the mass-populace is going to understand or like this film.

Too visceral, too depressing, too intelligent, too much.

reply

I disagree. If the masses will throw their money to watch any old cinematic fluff, then why not sneak an actual movie into the experience? It's a Catch 22. By dumbing down your output, you are cultivating an expectation for poor movies. It takes some patience and sacrificing the quickest possible buck to reverse the trend and encourage people to be critical.

I also question why people need to "like" a piece of media to get something out of it. This is like going out of one's way to read only those books which one already agrees with!

To OP.

You DO realize "Troll 2" was released the same year?

That one makes Hardware look like the Godfather.

Tell me about it. I remember a Fangoria writer calling this the best sci-fi/horror film since Ridley Scott's Alien and urging all the readers to see it. I think he concluded the write-up by saying "Watch this Stanley guy, he's the next big thing"
