seen it in the theater?

I had the pleasure of seeing this film in a theater in San Antonio when it was originally released. I was 15-16 at the time. The film has really stuck with me over the years, and I watch it about every 6mos or so. The sound track was awesome, Ministry, PIL... Plus the cameos: Iggy Pop, Lemmy Kilmister. and the little mutant guy who played Burglekutt in Willow.

I have always been into cyberpunk stuff, especially the cerebral stuff. This film is truly one of the finest of the style, surpassed only by Bladerunner.

I was wondering if anyone else had seen it during its theatrical run. Please post what you remember about how you felt about it when you first saw it.

I saw this in a double-bill with Dolph Lundgren's "I Come in Peace" back in 1990. I was 18 at the time, so two sci-fi movies back-to-back were a real treat. I liked how Hardware did a lot with a small budget, its memorable characters (Lincoln Weinberg Jr. is a hoot!) and I found myself dazzled by Stacey Travis.

I may not call Hardware a masterpiece, but I have a healthy respect for its efforts, which lift it above the few thousand straight-to-video sci-fi no-brain clunkers littering the shelves of video stores everywhere...

Saw it on Stockholm film festival in 1990 and subsequently when it was realeased in public theaters. I was twenty at the time and it made a big impression then. It's definitely not a masterpiece but most people who's in to cyberpunk and sci-fi (which I was at the time) seems to agree that it raises over the average low-budget sci-fi flick. I think it's best feature is the imaginative visuals. Now, 15 years later it's still nice to see something made in-camera without the "über-slick" CGI-feel.

The film actually gathered a small but enthusiastic following in Sweden. Me and my friends still refer to it from time to time.

I saw it in the theater when I was 7 or 8. Afterwards, we agreed that my dad couldn't pick out the movies anymore.

I saw it in the theater. I still remember leaving the theater wondering what happened and thinking there’s two hours of my life I’ll never get back.

My friend saw it in the theatre. He told me it was so bad he asked for a refund (which, of course, he didn't get). He was particulary pissed at how it ended *SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT*

"dude....they pushed it into a shower to kill it"

Of course this "achilles heel" was explained in the movie anyways...

Now for myself - I saw it on HBO or something and I've seen FAR worse. It's got the standard amount of B-movie suspense and has a certain "campiness" to it that makes it fun to watch. I'd say it has re-watchability to it and the female lead is a knockout - which never hurts :P

I saw in the theater when it first came out (1990 - I was about 13 then). I remember thinking there wasn't too much to it, and was pretty shoddy. I haven't seen it since. I should probably check it out again sometime to see if it's gotten better with age.

I've seen it back when it came out and watched it again just yesterday on video for the second time ever. I was 19 when it came out. At the time I was studying in London and I've read some article about it on how impressive it looks for such a tiny budgetted film etc. So I was intrigued plus the fact that I was really into sci-fi/horror and went to see it. I liked it so much back then that I even went and bought the soundtrack! (a true soundtrack with pieces of dialogue from the movie etc, not just a bunch of songs thrown in). A decade and a half later (and a few hundred movies) can't say that I was equally impressed though the visuals and music add to the stuffy atmosphere. However for a horror picture can't say that you'll be jumping from your seat. Characters are interesting though. And 5.4/10 is unfair!

I was about 24 when I saw it at the theatre. I too, watch this movie 2 or 3 times a year, it's just a great "unknown" movie, and truly one of the best sci-fi's of all time. I can't really recall what I felt, while watching it at the theatre, just that it was a really cool flick. I went back to see it again, as I knew, once it was gone, it'd be gone forever on the big screen. I'm glad to see McDermott's gone on to be a descently known actor, and will forever be in my "cool book" for being apart of this film. Any other movies of this type any of you recemend we may have not seen? There's one from 1992, with Rutger Hauer called "Split Second", I highly recemend it...
Cheers Hardware fans!

I saw it in the theater when I was 18 and about to graduate from high school. I thought it was pretty good, but a bit slow-paced and derivative. I still like it a lot, but think it has a few serious flaws which prevent it from being an all-time classic. I have submitted a review which has been posted where I give it a 7 out of 10. I keep hoping "Hardware" would get released on DVD already. My used VHS copy is pretty beat-up, so an upgrade to DVD is clearly in order.

I'd have to concur with many of the above posts including ghosts_of_mars opinion on McDermott's lush career. Being eighteen at the time I was rather impressionable with the Industrial tinged soundtrack which my own curiosities furthered. I too once purchased the VHS copy and will inevitably buy the DVD when there's something more than just chapters and screen shot special features with random drivel from the studio house.

I was fortunate enough to see HARDWARE in the theater in Virginia when it came out, LOVED IT. I was an old fart of 31 at the time, so you can imagine how ancient I am now. I've got a copy on VHS floating around somewhere and I had to run right out and buy the soundtrack. This film got me started on listening to Ministry. Great stuff! I'd buy a DVD copy in a heartbeat.

I just saw a British print at a midnight screening in NYC and I must say I was really tired and could not stay awake most of the first 30 minutes. The last hour was a struggle, but I found the whole thing sorta boring. After hearing about this for so long I thought I might have been in for a treat, but alas, I was mistaken.
