Best mob movie. Better than the Godfather

Greatest mob movie.
Watched it again a few weeks ago, holds up well.
Much better and far more exciting than the Godfather

The Godfather 1 & 2, Goodfellas, and Once Upon a Time in America are all essentially perfect crime films.

reply

Gotti with Armad Assante is better than both.

reply

LOL that's basically a TV movie.

reply

It was a TV movie, HBO. But what does that matter? Armad Assante gave the best performance in a mob movie I've ever seen.

Better than Pacino or Deniro or Marlon Brando. Those guys are all great but Assante was unbelievable in his role.

reply

I agree, far better. Godfather is a snoozefest. Only thing it has imo are some great quotes. But I've also always been a big Scorsese fan and never a Coppola fan.

reply

IMO:

1) Goodfellas
2) Godfather
3) Casino
4) Godfather 2

reply

Holy *beep* I completely agree with this list! I don't know why, but Casino is criminally underrated.

Cannonball Run 2 has to be up there also. Dom Deluise played a great mob boss

reply

You're wrong, Little Man and Kangaroo Jack are the best mob movies ever made.

Not a surprise though, you are usually wrong.

reply

I never seen those and movies that I haven't seen, cannot be considered one of the best

reply

They are. They are better than The Godfather I, II and Goodfellas put together.

reply

I'll put them on my watch list

reply

The first season of 1st & Ten had the best mob boss I ever saw.

reply

Ok by this metric, what about Robin Hood Men In Tights? Dom Deluise again with a powerhouse performance as the medieval godfather.

reply

You're being silly. There was no mafia in the days of Robin Hood

reply

Pretty sure there was.

reply

Obviously there was, I saw it in the movies.

reply

Goodfellas portrayed mobsters as the sociopaths they really are. The Godfather never did that

reply

I have always thought of the Godfather as the idealized view from the top. The big shots act and think that they are "men of honor" and that there is a code and so forth. The people at the top are a bit removed from the reality of the street.

Goodfellas I have always though as being the view from the bottom, but one where for most of the movie Hill still has his idealized glasses on. Only at the end, does he realize it was all a lie.

Donnie Brasco is the movie with the street view that has no illusions about the mob from the beginning.

I think all three are great films.

reply

i think the godfather romanticizes the lifestyle while goodfellas shows the dark side of it. they're both great but i prefer the approach that goodfellas takes

reply

Goodfellas is definitely better than The Godfather. Casino is better than the The Godfather. Hell, Brian De Palmas Scarface is better than The Godfather.

reply

I used to listen on Saturdays to a syndicated radio show that was about movies. The host once said that while The Godfather was one of if not the best movies ever, Goodfellas was the best mob movie ever. I tend to agree with him.

reply

Of course Goodfellas is a better mob movie; it's a true story. A biopic of mob life. The Godfather is a mob movie like Apocalypse Now is a Vietnam movie. Vietnam was just the backdrop around which an entirely bigger story is told. Same thing with The Godfather. Mafia life was just a backdrop for a story about pursuing the American dream, and the power struggles between those who are fighting for the same thing. The Godfather is more of an allegory, or a metaphor, and a damn well-made film. But Goodfellas is well-made, and a great film too.
