Captures the feel of late-'80s/early-'90s very well

Ghost may be the best representation of old-school gritty New York from the late '80s/early '90s, but it's not the best of all time. Maniac (1980) is such a bleak, dirty, run-down look at early 1980s New York that I can't even bring myself to watch it a second time due to it being so effective in a "I need to shower after this movie" kind of way. I mean, the subject matter of the movie contributes to that, but still, the NY setting of the movie is quite a depressing one to behold.

New York's grit and grime was also showcased in Serpico, Taxi Driver and Midnight Cowboy, a bit further back.

I'm a Millennial, technically, but old enough to remember what New York looked like when it was just beginning to emerge from that kind of atmosphere. It was a dirty and dangerous place to be feared by suburban kids like me. The trains were still covered with graffiti. One of the reasons I love this film is how well it captured the look and feel the city during my childhood. A dangerous, but adventurous place.

after reading this thread the line "new york must be the friendliest place on earth" in the movie crocodile dundee (1986) becomes even funnier, i'm not even in the same country as you people, but this thread looks like a nightmare, even though i've never seen this movie i'm so familiar with it because of the countless amount of amazing spoofs made from it, whoopi goldberg in the cast came unexpected to me, i suppose one of the earliest spoofs has to be the far out segment in the "naked gun" franchise, and "family guy" as peter griffin is creating havoc through town with his road house kicking reference also gives a shout out to this title at one point, and it is also referenced in probably one of my favorite 21st century movies "bedazzled" in a great line at a funny scene, i thought this flick wasn't as old as it is though since i had the idea somehow that "nothing but trouble" was this lead actress debut movie, after realising this was shot prior to that it seems weird she would even be a part of that movie considering what a turkey reputation it has, though to be completely honest that was actually my all time favorite movie when i was a kid, i have no idea why and i can't explain it now, i suppose i liked the cast, it has an amazing soundtrack though (thanks to a blues brother in the cast perhaps? he even appears as elwood on the cd) with ray charles opening up both on the cd and the movie, i wonder how many blues brothers fans have picked up on both ray and elwood appearing on the soundtrack to "nothing but trouble", i suppose because of ray being on the warner bros label through the 1990 decade he appeared in situations like that, in a lot of movie soundtracks and fun cameos during that time, like playing a bus driver in the pale naked gun version "spy hard".
