I do feel the movie would've gone into another direction if Jim had made amends with his father and he wouldn't have been such a bad guy if he has done so, I feel the burglary scene had something to do with Jim's father not being nice & loving towards him.
I know he wanted money so that he could buy his own van. I didn't like Jim at all. He tried to kill Edward, and hit Kim! He was always a jerk. Like father/like son.
I've felt if Jim would do something to win his dad's love it would help him become a better person, I've felt sorry for Jim because of the cruel treatment he has received from his dad.
You know it's funny, I've been watching this film for years. But only recently I've realized that there is no doubt that Jim's father was cruel and/or abusive to him. It's so clear, especially from the way Jim talks about him. Plus, it makes a lot of sense when you think about why Jim is the way he is, as a person. Where do you think he learned all of that shitty behavior from? It's so obvious, I'm stunned I never realized it earlier.
I'm honestly a little surprised that we never saw Jim's father, considering he actually played somewhat of a crucial role when it came to the burglary scene and the aftermath.
"My old man thinks he's retarded, otherwise (Edward) would still be in jail!" That's a pretty damn crucial plot element and yet we never see this guy. What gives?
As much as I hate Jim (because it's his fault the neighbourhood starts to turn against Edward) I can see where you're going with this. I don't know if it would have been necessary to the plot of the film to have Jim make amends with his father, but I would have liked to have seen at least one scene with him.
I've felt one scene with Jim's father would have made the movie more interesting, I would like for Jim to express himself towards his father by the way he's treating him and for them to make amends with each other, I feel Jim would've overcame his jealousy towards Edward and him being able to move on from Kim breaking up with him.
I didn't think Jim was that bad of a guy up until the burglary scene.
