Did anyone get annoyed by this scene?

Did anyone get annoyed by the scene when Helen tells Edward that she's calling the police after he cut off one of the legs of a tree on her yard, I did and the way she said it annoyed me, plus I also wondered if Edward did hear Helen tell Edward that she's calling the police

I had liked Helen prior to that scene and this was the scene where I've totally lost respect for her.

To be fair to Helen, Joyce had told her that Edward had sexually assaulted her and he had been caught breaking into a neighbors house and taken the blame for it leaving the neighborhood to believe that he had acted alone. It's understandable I suppose.

I think you are all missing the point of the film. ALL of the neighbors, the entire community of hypocritical misfits is meant to appear annoying to the movie-watcher. Well, to a normal, good-hearted, level-headed human person anyway. These people are meant to represent an American that appears all equally pretty, well manicured and behaved on the outside, while on the inside they are weird, sick, malicious... you get it now? The movie is a fable/parable where the characters (blends of persons and personified caricatures) all face moral dilemmas and all make the wrong decisions leading to bad, bad results. And only some of them learn the correct lessons from it all. As does the viewer. Unless you didn't get it and missed the entire moral of the film. Sigh.

We got it thanks. The moral of the film and the nature of the parable is as blatant as your reaction to this post is unnecessary. I think you might keep your misguided outrage and direct it at your own misunderstandings of other peoples views. "Sigh" indeed.
