You mean would have. I think Hanks could have played McCoy better today then back then. In 1990, Hanks was Mr. Nice Guy, and he never fully sheds that role here. It's perfectly acceptable to have a movie where bad things happen to Tom Hanks. Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Road to Perdition. Audiences accept that. But even in Road to Perdition, Hanks has never been a character so despicable that audiences believe that Hanks deserves everything that's happening. At least, not until The Ladykillers. If you had the Coen brothers around to get that kind of performance out of him, and someone like Martin Scorsese writing and/or directing, since he understands both New York City and the various ethnic groups' mentalities, this would have been much better.
