Hypocrite Judge

If the judge played by Morgan Freeman really meant all that he said to those who objected to the verdict at the end of the movie, he couldn't have cared less HOW the all-important evidence was obtained, and Tom Hanks would not have had to lie.

The judge didn't have the option. The judge CANNOT ignore the rule of law that deals with how the evidence was obtained, in this case a tape recording. In most states, at least one of the people being recorded has to know that the conversation is being recorded for the recording to be admissable. If a recording was obtained illegally, it is inadmissable, period.

Who threw the wet blanket over this terrific film? I saw it last night and marveled at how wonderful it unfolded this story. The actors were magnificent and although I'm a DePalma fan, I didn't recognize his style. It only grossed $15 million? That is a tragedy and says a lot about our culture. This would be on my list of top 10 films of the year. An intelligent, thoughtful look at our times. The cast was incredible -- Andre Gregory of My Dinner With Andre, George Plimpton, super gems.

This film was such a let-down. Some top-notch acting talent, Brian DePalma at the helm, and it's still totally weak.

Never read the book, but the build up for the film made you think this would be Dante's Inferno for the greed of the 80s. Wall Street in particular would get scorched. But then it's just a cute little movie about some slightly bad people. AND the only good person is the Wall Street guy! What a let-down!

DePalma's worst film, by far! This is a guy who can really make you squeem, when he puts in a bit of effort. And Wall Street (and New York, in general) greed, lust, and indecency of the 80s should have given him ample ammunition. How could he have dropped the ball on this one?!

But it seems that some films which come from hard-hitting books are almost designed to fail. The film version of Less Than Zero, for example, is the exact opposite of what the book was all about. It seems that films which truly challenge the establishment CANNOT be made by the establishment; Hollywood can't make honest films about Hollywood, Wall Street money can't find it's way into films which really expose Wall Street corruption, etc.
