Prolly a missing person case, but not a criminal case -- wait, I'll correct myself -- yes.

Emmet is missing, however, he hasn't paid taxes on his garage property... so, it's very possible that could encompass at least two separate investigations.

It would be fun to see how authorities try to figure out what happened to him, but somehow get mixed up in time travel stuff as well.

Only if we assume that all these infinite timelines exist at the same instant, which we generally don't.

When Doc went back to 1955, it *was* 1955. There was no 1985 Doc or 1985 people to report him missing.

Oh, I see what you're saying.

Doc spent many years in the 1800s getting married, having kids, and building his time locomotive. But he arrived in 1985 the day after Marty returned, so no one besides Marty and Jennifer knew he was gone for day.

Yes, or sold off his property, gave it to Marty, or donated it.

No.

Especially "poor" human life.

Funnily enough, the sequel video game Back to the Future by Telltale has him coming back to 1985 from time to time. Though it starts off with Doc missing cause he had gone back to 1931 to uncover who burned down a speakeasy and got arrested by cops for being present at the scene and then killed by gangsters cause they thought he had done it. So Marty has to go back to 1931 to stop that from happening. But in the end, Doc is living in multiple timelines including 1985.

Whew! That's a lot of fourth-dimensional thinking!
