Their attire was suited to their personalities and their financial means.
Brian: He sure let out the zany side of his personality with those "island" shirts and goofy ties. They suited him, but I hate ugly ties! They looked like the type that are hand painted on the boardwalk and sold to tourists. I'm glad he ditched them in the later years. I really liked his leather jacket.
Joe: He dressed conservatively, just like his personality. Early on when he was grounded with high blood pressure, he took out his frustration on Brian by telling him to dress differently for work. Brian countered that he didn't have time to shop at the "dull man" store.
In sweaters and other casual clothes he looked like a New England preppie type.
Coincidentally, I used to work for a commuter airline in New England and the cast dressed, for the most part, like typical New Englanders. The weather is cold most of the year and clothes are functional.
Helen wore a lot of pants and they looked like the thick winter wear of New England. Of course, her short skirts and white socks were cute. She had several lovely formal dresses, mostly in black. I really liked the pink dress she wore the night before the wedding (when she had a great time at her bachelorette party).
Roy: I thought Roy dressed well for a portly man. He obviously wasn't wearing Armani suits or anything expensive. But he dressed appropriately for the owner of an airline. I liked his conservative ties much more than Brian's cartoony ones.
Lowell: He was a mechanic and wore the usual coveralls a lot. His wardrobe was functional. Lowell was just the typical guy who doesn't put a lot of thought into "a wardrobe". He just put on clothes.
Faye: Her clothes were conservative, nice colors, nothing fancy. She dressed as an older woman who was carrying some extra pounds would dress. She usually looked nice and well groomed. Her stewardess training came through.
Alex: As a pilot, her jeans were appropriate. But I think she liked to tease men. Her tight tops and jeans just screamed, "Look at ME!". But then she'd berate the Hacketts for looking. She did look good in formal clothes (lots of black dresses like Helen) with her hair pulled up in a twist. Stunning.
Antonio: His clothes were suitable for a cabbie. As another poster wrote, he repeated the same shirts a lot. Typical of a working class guy who didn't have much cash for clothes. He did clean up very nicely those times he wore a tux. He splurged on a very nice suit for Walter the traffic controller's wedding. However the jacket got stained at the reception.
Helen's wedding dress was nice but a bit girlish for a bride who was in her thirties. Still, it suited her.
I never understood the choice for her attendants' dresses. They were very classy looking. But black and gold seems more appropriate for a formal winter wedding. Joe and Helen got married in May.
I suppose they wanted to find a dress that looked good on Faye. However, I never understood her as a bridesmaid either. Sure she was a friend of Helen and Joe and would be at their wedding. But usually white haired women in their mid sixties aren't tapped to be bridesMAIDS. Didn't Helen have any younger friends?
Just found it odd. At the many weddings I've attended, the bridesmaids were never old enough for Social Security.
