I caved

I bought the last season of NX. I already had the other 5 seasons. I got it with a gift card for Father's Day. Please don't tell me I made a mistake, I need words of encouragement, please. I did watch it during it 1st run and remembering that the new Dr. sucked. But I thought to be a treu NXer you needed to own them all. Other than that give me words of hope.

You didn't make a mistake, at least from my perspective.

I plan to pick up Season Six of NX some time in the future, and I almost "caved" myself over the weekend but decided to get something else. I've got the entire series on "homemade" DVDs, dubbed from old VHS tapes from when I recorded the series during A&E's tenure with it in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and I've got every season on "store-bought" DVDs except for Season Six, which, as I noted, I will get sooner or later.

Season Six gets a lot of guff, and I'm certainly one of those who noted the decline in NX starting in Season Five, when David Chase took over from Joshua Brand and John Falsey as executive producer. But Season Six can be divided into three phases.

The first third is essentially a continuation of the previous season with many of the same strengths and weaknesses; "Dinner at Seven-Thirty," "Shofar, So Good," and "The Letter" are strong episodes from this period. The middle third finds Joel in Manonash and is the culmination of his journey. Joel is at his coolest here, and although a couple of the episodes are misfires ("Sons of the Tundra" and especially "Realpolitik"), and a couple could have been stronger ("The Great Mushroom," "The Mommy's Curse"), a couple more are delights ("Mi Casa, Su Casa," "Horns") while "The Quest," which bids farewell to Joel, is my favorite NX episode (I still tear up at the end) and may be the greatest in the series.

Then comes the final third, and there is no question that compared to the rest it is, overall, messy and mediocre, exemplified by the sloppy, misshapen finale "Tranquility Base." Yet "Buss Stop" and especially "Balls" have their strong moments and hold up as good, not great, NX episodes overall. And although my mind may be dipping into the gutter now, to me Teri Polo is the hottest woman to appear on NX, so even if I'm suffering through "Little Italy" there is still a glimpse of Michelle Capra now and then.

So, no, I don't think you made a mistake.

Thanks Darryl I needed that. Dinner at 7:30 has always been one of my fav. I guess being a big science fiction fan, that's why it works for me.

I loved season six. Despite its darker tone and joels departure. There are only a few episodes without him. The kapras are ok. Good moments with ed and Maurice wrapping up their storyline. I actually really enjoyed the Casey at Bat stuff, the bus stop and balls. The finale is rushes getting a quick ending and janie turner was really sick so only has a cameo.

Back at ya, ITN. How's it going? Thanks for all the input, I can't wait to watch it. Unfortunely, it has been way to busy at my house, my son bought a house, my step daughter is getting ready to go to Law school in Florida, my mother-in-law passed away from cancer. So, I've been running around like a head with its chicken cut off. But once I watch the 6th season I'll post my review, I promise. Until the meantime be safe. And you too darryl.
