What I love about Law & Order = straight to business

I love these legal / police shows - LA Law, the Practice, Law & Order, NYPD Blue, SVU

What this show - the original Law & Order - has over the other shows is a straight to business atmosphere. The show does not depict the characters personal lives, there are no love triangles, no plots involving adultery or divorce or therapy etc. the show is simply Law & Order.

Shows like La Law, SVU, & NYPD Blue don’t have that quality. These shows like to focus on personal lives and other nonessentials

liked that also, so many shows just show bedroom scenes, Lenny/Greene where the best cops just a little personal stuff but mostly solve the crime, not sure what writers are up to today

Not entirely true. L&O does minimize stories about the main characters. However, they have addressed personal issues over the years. What they don't do is devote episodes to them. They happen over time and in small bites.

Some of them have been the custody issue between Jaimie Ross and her husband, Lenny Briscoe's daughter and her drug problems, Ray Curtis' infidelity, Anita Van Buren's law suite against the city for discrimination and her cancer diagnosis, a few others.

It was fresh in keeping those stories minimal and I appreciated it as a contrast to other shows. Some attention to the main characters lives is necessary, in my opinion, to keep interest.
