Why are Superman and Batman movies playing?

In one episode Barry is walking his dog and passes a movie theatre where Batman/Superman double feature is playing. That implies that the Flash is real while Batman and Superman are just comic book characters.

Why did they do this when there could have been other super heroes brought along to help The Flash if the show hadn't been cancelled?

I guess it is supposed to make the Flash realistic but it doesn't make any sense.

Perhaps Superman/Batman could have been made after seeing them in action in Gotham City and Metropolis. After they started crime fighting they sold the movie rights.

Around the time that the 89 Batman movie was playing, characters in the DC Universe would reference it. Some would even give Batman a hard time about it. And more recently after a major crossover event in all DC books, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman have been missing for a year and a movie is made as a tribute to Superman. Clark and Lois watch it and joke about the inaccuracies (such as the actress playing Clark's mom being too young and him growing up in Chicago). So you could infer that the movies are made without the consent of the superheroes in question. So in that Flash episode you could imagine that those are exploitative movies made about public figures (like tv movies of the week, only grander).

Even though all it really is and was meant to be is a visual gag.

i think the cool thing about this scene is, if you notice, when barry is walking earl past the theatre, the music in the background is the flash theme, but it also has the beginning violin tone of the batman theme from the 89 movie as well. really cool if you catch it.

I noticed that too. The themes for both Batman and the Flash were written by Danny Eflman

i think the makers of the show were just having fun with it. they are all D.C. comic characters. it made me smile.

All three of the entities were WB properties. Probably a little self-promotion.

I think they were just making movies about the heroes in their own world.Btw which episode was that?
