Is this series good?

I am a major DC comcis fan and a fan of bruce timm's dc comics animated universe.Would I like this series?

reply

I think so. It's not the greatest comic book adaptation ever made, but it was a good show. Sure, there'd be some episodes that got downright campy, but most of the time, it was a very entertaining show. A couple of things about the show deviated from the comic version of The Flash: for example, on the show, Barry Allen has an older brother named Jay (a likely reference to the first Flash, Jay Garrick), not to mention on the show, Dr. Tina McGee is Barry's possible love interest (although from what I hear, in the comics, she briefly dated Wally West), and Iris West, Barry's on-and-off girlfriend on the show and eventual wife in the comics, is an artist on the show and a journalist in the comics. Of course, I'm no Flash expert, but those differences don't seem to be a huge deal.

Overall, I recommend checking the out the show.

reply

Thanks alot. But the show is serious,in general, right?

reply

The show in general, is serious. Compared to the 60s "Batman" series, "The Flash" has a different feel/tone to it. In my opinion, it's one of the most brilliantly executed comic book series ever, even though it lasted only one season.

Thank you.I was considering buying it but I wanted to make sure it wasn't too campy you know.I think I might get it.Btw do people die and is captain cold cool? (NO pun intended).

reply

In most of the episodes, people do die but it's not gruesome-looking. There's some blood but not a whole lot.

Captain Cold's TV appearance looks completely different than his comic-book counterpart, but in a good way. I like his appearance on the show better than his appearance in the comics. His TV appearance is more on the subdued side (the same can be applied to Mirror Master) and a lot more menacing and grounded in reality.

Thanks for all the information - both of you.I think I will get the boxset.

I never had time to watch this show while it was on...I recently bought the DVD series set after seeing the pilot episode on vhs. Wow! I was impressed. Although the Flash was never one of my favorite characters I think the show was terrific. John Wesley Shipp was wonderful both as Barry Allen and the Flash. In general, the tone of the series was serious and not campy...I prefer this approach so to my mind it is far better than any of the series before or after...that includes Batman, Wonder Woman, Superboy, etc, etc.
It was way ahead of it's time and the effects were quite good, too, still looking good today in comparison to all the CGI stuff. I love the theme music too, it's very rousing and really sets the rip-roaring adventure tone that's so appropriate.
To my mind, this series compares favorably to the current Spiderman and Fantastic Four films.

don't forget Barry Allen's parents live on "Garrick ave" another reference to the first flash. Jay's son's name is also named "Wally" in the show. a reference to the third flash

all three flashs were given reference in the

-Jay Garrick's reference were Barry's older brother was named Jay and his parents lived on Garrick ave

-Barry Allen was second flash and main character of the show.

-Barry's nephew (Jay Allen's son) was named "Wally" the third flash in the comics

reply
