DVD set picture quality

Loved this series when it was originally on so I finally got around to buying the DVD set.

Sadly though the picture quality for the DVD transfer is pretty bad. However, since shows were shot on video back then, I doubt that much remasering could be done. The weird thing though is that the Pilot looks FANTASTIC. On a 1080p LED TV and with a blu ray player that upconverts, it looked borderline cinematic. So it makes me wonder if the pilot episode was shot on film because it was a two hour presentation (90 minutes minus commercials). I mean there is a noticeable difference in quality.

No, the show was shot on film, but post-production and edited on video - so the final masters are not on film, but on video - where they added the effects.

It's the same reason Star Trek : The Next Generation had to be redone from scratch.

As for THE FLASH pilot, post-production was done totally on film so it could be released theatrically overseas.
