this was the first time I saw a muscle suit instead of actual muscles

Just saying, I was 14 and was big into Superman, and also the Challenge of The Super Friends so I knew who Flash was (almost said SLASH from GNR FAME, and my guitar idol) I just never saw a suit with built in muscles and never seen Flash with Muscles, but always enjoyed the show, sadly only one season.. Like Freaks n Geeks .. Just started this because I had never seen a muscle suit, after the arnold, lou and stallone era I was LIKE WTF is this..

I thought it was weird too, especially since John Wesley Shipp had real muscles anyway. It was like...overkill. I'm not sure how he would have looked in a red spandex suit, but maybe something that didn't look too fake liek the one used in the series? Still, despite the odd costume desing, I really really liked this show, and bought the series on DVD. I remember actually watching this when it was airing on TV, and being disappointed that it got cancelled.

If you think about it, a muscular suit that makes you look buffer than you are is a good disguise when you don't want your identity known.

OP you didn't see the 1989 Batman movie with Michael Keaton then.

The suit was an attempt at capturing the look of the comic. Spandex doesn't translate well on screen, as can be witnessed in the Marvel pilot movies of the 70's, Electra-Woman and Dyna-Girl, and Legends of the Superheroes. Costume designers tried different things to get a better look. The sculpting was fine in long shots but didn't work very well in close ups. Bob Ringwood, who had done Dune before Batman, set the standard in Batman that everyone else followed (for a time).

What was the actual suit made of? It looks like a different sort of fabric.

Thank you - it does look almost like a velour suit.
