VERY underrated

IMDB poll asked us which is our favourite TV show based on a comic book.

I was a huge of fan of the old 60's Batman show, but when forced to decide, I ultimately picked The Flash.

this was a great tv show. not only a solid DC adaption, but on its own it was one of the best series around. Maybe not on par with Star Trek TNG, but certainly towered over alot of other crud.

The show was well cast - Shipp made a terrific hero, and I gotta say, this show featured Mark Hamill's best performance to date, as a villain.

They were admitedly a few corny pieces to this show, which were mostly due to budgetary restraints, otherwise, from the action, to the casting, to the awesome musical score, The Flash still remains today as a great series worth watching on DVD.

Its a shame that they never were able to produce multiple seasons.

I completely agree. The flash was a great show! It was a good adaptation of the comic, the cast was strong, the writing was good, the special effects were pretty good for their time. it;s actually held up pretty well, too.

The initial pilot, which was "made for tv movie" length, is actually one of my favorite comic inspired movies of all time, if it counts as one.

I agree with you about this MovieMan1975 that it is a shame that this show did not last multiple seasons and I wonder why though? See I love TV shows like this and will sit and watch them and what caught my attention about the show was that the same people that made The Batman costume spent the millions to create Shipps costume for The Flash.

I remember when this came out in the Fall of 1990 because I had seen the previews to the show while flipping channels or I would watch a program that CBS would show that I liked to watch back in the day. I was in high school at that time and playing football as well. I remember I wanted to catch the pilot show and had to record it because I went with my teammates to eat spaghetti with them which was a tradition to do before the games the next day.

I remember Mark Hamill playing The Trickster in The Flash and it has been a long time since I seen it. I just rented this from Netflix. I am going to have to wait until Monday now to catch the next DVD because I did not get to mail it yesterday because I slept in before going to a college class yesterday evening. I am enjoying watching this great gem and it is a shame that it has not been shown in reruns like in the SCIFI Channel or now since NBC bought it out and changed the name of the network to The SYFY Channel as it is known now.

See I use to love watching The SCIFI Channel because like right now they would show reruns in marathons of shows that had SCIFI content in it which this had and I was shocked that the SCIFI Channel never picked this up to air in reruns at all.

I really like the costume too. For the early 90's it was suprisingly effective!

The Flash and Firefly are two shows that were, without a doubt, prematurely cancelled.

reply

Yes the costume was very efective and looked exactly on how The Flash looked like in the comic books too.

Yes they were canceled before any steam could help the wheels to turn on the shows all right. Plus, I know that they advertised The Flash because I remember seeing it and could not wait til it came on.

the DVD set for the entire series can be found for around $25!!

reply

That is not bad at all for that price for the DVD box set.

Yes for once they got it just right. But then the series didn't last long enough to make the most of it.

reply

The problem was that CBS did not give it a chance to develop a fan base. When it started to get better before it was canceled CBS got rid of it.

Exactly. CBS initially put in on at 8:30 on Thursdays so it wouldn't be up against Cosby. They moved it around and it never got a chance to develop a fan base. CBS destroyed this show.

What else is new? Networks have always been giving some of the most underrated shows the worst time slots, thus setting them up for failure.

But Reba ran for like 7 years.... lol

Just watched the Pilot for the first time since the series first aired, and hating myself for having forgotten how great it was!

During the end credits, I suddenly realized why that suit looked so good...

Which makes sense, seeing as how the next project from Danny Bilson & Paul DiMeo was the movie version!

I Agree..I Loved This Show.

I was surprised by how high quality the pilot is. (That's all I've seen so far.) It works as a decent Flash 'movie'.

In tone, score, and costumes it's in line with other pulp hero movies of '89-90 - especially Burton's Batman (they could be in the same universe) but also Darkman and Dick Tracy. The punk/metalhead villains are little over-the-top, but there were the go-to bad guys back then. The lead antagonist recruiting an army of criminals is similar to The Dark Knight and Punisher: War Zone.

The lead is appealing and so are the supporting good characters. And the writing respects the material.

8/10.

This is underrated, it's also one of my all time favourite television shows of all time. They had a great cast, especially Shipp and it felt like watching a movie instead of a T.V show.

Well summed up. I love this show, and each episode does seem like a short movie.
