What's up with the epidemic of cast members leaving midway through production? Were they not under contract?

A total of six cast members were removed from the opening credits during a season, which means that Shannen Doherty and Kathleen Robertson (Claire) were the only ones who left at the very end of production. Very out of the ordinary. Yes, I know that Hilary Swank and Jamie Walters were fired. But, what about the majority who resigned -- Jason Priestley, Luke Perry, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, and Vanessa Marcil (Gina Kincaid)? Did they violate their breach of contract?

I think Marcil and Thiessen etc had big dreams of hitting paydirt and big name stardom--like the original cast--and people were way too nice to tell them it's like the lottery, only happens for a select group of people. They were not getting t-shirts, dolls, posters....etc. Thiessen probably had the best chance but she was too linked to Saturday morning and Saved By The Bell.

Perry did not resign. he wanted to work on movies. Otherwise he would not have been allowed back. And I am pretty sure they would not have allowed him either.

Priestly--well actually he probably begged considering the ratings slide the show was now in. Can't say I blame him.
