question regarding Donnas virginity...

Now I know this show has had a few continuity errors and all... but I was recently RE-watching the episode from season 1 where they all went to Palm Springs and stayed with David's grandparents, etc...

...and when Brenda was talking to Kelly and Donna in that episode about the prospect of losing her virginity to Dylan, Kelly was giving her some advice about what sex was like, etc... and it SEEMED to imply when Donna chimed in that SHE had an inkling about what it was possibly like and that she may have been giving her own 2 cents... the dialogue was somewhat cryptic about it, it was kinda hard to tell...

Now I know Donnas character wasn't very well developed in season 1 and didn't get much screen time or a backstory or storylines at all at that point...
...but my question is this... was Donna intended to be written as a virgin from the beginning??? Or was she written as a character who had sexual experience AT FIRST and then it was retconned and she was RE-written to be a virgin in season 2 when she got together with David and kept making him wait?

Or did the writers not decide one way or another if Donna was a virgin, but MADE her one in season 2 with her whole relationship with David?

its just that Palm Springs episode from season 1 was a bit confusing to me. Plus there was that guy in the season 1 episode when Brandon crashes his car and gets arrested for drunk driving. When Donna had that party at her parents house when they were on vacation. That guy she was dating who was all over her at her party. What was the deal with HIM??? Donna having him over at her parents house when she had the house all to herself, that implies something sexual may happen lol... but who WAS that guy? What was his name? Was he ever brought up, or seen or mentioned after that episode?

Sorry for the confusion, but the status of Donnas virginity in season 1 seemed oddly inconsistent with her virginity for the rest of the series lol... just wondering if anyone knows what the deal was

I always thought the same thing about Donna.

In that Palm Springs episode it is implied that Donna had sex. Brenda says something like- I feel like I'm the last virgin on the planet!" To which Kelly replies- "Brenda, you are." Donna also tells Brenda something like- "Don't worry- you'll like it."

If Donna was supposed to be a virgin, Kelly wouldn't have told Brenda that she was the only virgin left & I highly doubt that a virgin would tell another virgin that they will enjoy sex- how would they know?

I think Aaron Spelling was thinking about his daughter's reputation being confused w/ Donna's so he made Donna a virgin.

I have nothing to support that, just my 2 cents.

You're totally right about that. I forgot about the "last virgin on earth/you are" dialogue between Brenda and Kelly...

...and besides, Brenda was NOT the only virgin in the gang at that time... even if Donnas possible sexual experience WAS retconned in season 2... David was ALSO a virgin and so was Andrea... unless Kelly didn't KNOW that David and Andrea were both virgins... or if David and Andreas possible sexual experiences were ALSO retconned after season 1 lol...
...but that cant b the case with Andrea because in the final episode of season 1 she offered her virginity to Brandon and they ALMOST did it... so her status as a virgin WAS known in season 1. Kelly probably just didn't know she was a virgin.

Personally I dont't think Kelly's comment was about whether she actually KNEW who was or wasn't a virgin (I'm speaking specifically of your David and Andrea example, obviously she'd know Donna's status.) I think it was just one of those throwaway "everyone's doing it, get on board" comments that isn't so specific.

And heck, maybe Donna was exaggerating/lying and Kelly WAS wrong about her. It wouldn't be the first time a teen claimed to be sexually active when she wasn't. Wasn't Andrea the first of the gang Donna "confessed" to about it, kind of giving them something in common? (Correct me if I'm wrong on that memory.) Even so, she might have grown a little more confident about it than those early episodes.

reply

I always thought Donna just said that to fit in with the crowd and hide the fact that she was a virgin.

reply

Maybe Donna was "Half A Virgin", like Regina George said she had been on 'Mean Girls.'
Not sure what that means, but that part always cracks me up :) :)

reply

Maybe half a virgin means she did everything else but didn't go all the way lol

reply

Maybe that is it. Ha Ha

but in general, SOME of the continuity in season 1 was altered from season 2 on...

...and almost NONE of the continuity from the pilot made it into the rest of the series... that black male principal, the Spanish teacher, the heavyset bearded science teacher were never seen again

And MaryAnn Moore would have been a pretty cool recurring love interest for Brandon, but she was never seen or mentioned again in the series

And those 2 girls who were hanging out with Kelly and Donna in the pilot... I believe their names were Kathy and Michelle? They were never seen or heard from again either. What was up with them? lol

I always thought the same about Donna. I

I haven't seen season 1 in years but did Brandon come onto the show having already had sex with girl or was he also a virgin?

I can't believe no one remembers him dancing from the bathroom to his room the morning after...

Well, to be fair POP cuts a lot of stuff so that scene may be one of them.

I do remember that scene & the original music was "In the Mood"- I'm sure changed to generic '40s music if that scene is kept in the episode.

With all of the continuity problems in this show, it is amazing that Donna was a friend of Kelly's for the entire show's run, instead of just disappearing and showing up years later as her maid from Russia or something.

I got the picture from TheDaily 90210 tumblr site.

I bet after season 1 the writers and everybody probably realized we need to set a good example and have somebody as a virgin. They were probably hoping nobody remembers this particular scene and thought they could get away with it haha or something.

Andrea lost her virginity in college--wasn't the obvious choice her? Donna wasn't convincing.
