'Sex, Lies, and Videotape' or 'Speaking Parts'

I'm just wonderin' which film was completed first? I find them to be really similar, and both films were '89 releases. Did someone steal an idea or did the films just coincidentally coincide with each other, or did the studios pair them up for the purpose of a different target audience?

Sex, Lies, and Videotape: 20 January 1989 (Sundance Film Festival)

Speaking Parts: 8 September 1989 (Toronto Film Festival)

....and how are these two films similar again?

I feel that both films dealt with the theme of the power and repercussions of images via camcorder. Both films entwine elements of imagery and distorted relationships in order to produce revalation/catharsis. Plots are drastically different yet their themes are quite similar. I understand that Soderbergh's film was presented first at a film festival, but I don't understand if this indicates thaT his production was completed before Egoyan's? Holla back

I think that Soderbergh wrote a book about the process of making sex, lies and videotape. I couldn't find it on amazon.co.uk, though, only the scriptbook. The book probably says when filming took place. Judging by the comments in the back of the script book, it was hot in Louisiana at the time.

maranda4: Well, since SLaV had its premiere approx. eight months before SP.
Then you can pretty safely assume that SLaV was filmed and completed before SP....

I guess you're looking for the filming dates or similar?
That's usually presented in the "box office/business"-section of each film here at imdb.
Alas, none of the films has any info on that. At least not yet.

I'm assuming that both quaddo and Radiant Rose favor SLaV over SP ?
Personally, I found SP's esoteric vibe/look more aesthetically appealing.

reply

Haven't seen SP. It may be a great film, but sex, lies and videotape has James Spader and Laura San Giacomo.
