Okay. my friend and i are having a stoned argument.
andie finds her sister's pearl earring in her bedroom. she is wearing pearl earrings in the last scene in the bar when she gives a plant to her sister.
she only found one earring in the vacuum at home, so my friend is arguing that it's not the same as the last scene, but i am a girl and i know pearls and it is. somehow she got a matching earring.
I will look out for Cynthia's earrings in the "it looks like a tablecloth" plant scene! Did you know that in the original script it is a diamond earring? ---------------------- Nicebat: party animal.
Perhaps (not movie based) her sister came over to visit and dropped an earring. John found it, later, on the floor and put it in his pocket - knowing it's worth something and wants to return it.
Hours later, he takes off his pants and throws them on the bed before taking a shower. The earring falls out of the pocket and lands under the bed.
Now, wifey comes along and vacuums it up.....
Chaos.
"Any last words, punk?" "Yeah, your wife is good in bed." "So, you're a liar, too?"
As for how Cynthia lost the earring at their house: I assumed she was wearing the earrings when she came over for her tryst with John (when he was lying there with the hanging plant covering his goods). In fact you see her taking off her earrings and putting them in her coat pocket. It is possible that is when one of the earrings fell out onto the floor.
We see Cynthia take off the earring, presumably it gets in the way during whatever she and John do in bed. From the way she refers to it, I think there is only one pearl earring. I often wear odd earrings myself, and am doing so as I type, not through choice but because I lost the matching earrings.
and earlier when ann went to see cynthia, cynthia is getting ready for work. she is looking for something and then ann says "what did you lose" and cynthia says "i can't find my other pearl earring."
so when see finds it later it just clicks to her.
Jealousy is all the fun you *think* they're having.
first: i have just watched that scene 5 times in a row. it looks like cynthia is wearing silver hoop earrings - not pearl earrings. besides, it is very hard to see her earrings at all - her hair hangs over them the entire scene, and we can't get a good look.
second: hypothetically, if cynthia had been wearing pearl earrings, more specifically, those earrings she had lost and ann later found next to the bed, soderbergh would not have had cynthia cover them up with her hair like that during the bar scene at the end of the film. he would have wanted us to see that she was wearing the pearl earrings in order to show, very subtly (which is very characteristic of this movie and why i love it), that ann had returned the earring(s) to cynthia - a symbol that ann forgave her and did not hold her responsible for the destruction of her marriage (that is, only john was to blame).
however nice that subtlety would have been, i'm afraid soderbergh did not think to include it in the film. the earrings in the bar scene were hoops.
cynthia is not wearing pearl earrings in either scene in the bayou bar. in the final scene, she is clearly wearing hoops that can be seen immediately after she climbs over the bar with all the empty bottles and that hilarious barfly is trying to name their kid rusty. (without even knowing her name! classic!) it's super hard to see at first, but in the first bayou scene, she's wearing beaded dangly earrings.
i think it's a perfectly logical assumption for a suspicious, repressed housewife who had already asked about an affair between her husband and sister to find her sister's earring, wonder how it got into HER bedroom, and then realize they'd indeed been snogging. she and her sis are very close despite their differences (sheez, they talk to each other about some pretty intimate stuff) and it seems to me that anne would know the score right away.
Well this is a vey old thread but since it is on right now (thanks to DVR...GOT TO LOVE those things LOL) I just had to get on here and see what we all are talking about....
Clearly Cynthia takes off an earing and puts in her coat pocket. Also clearly, she does not disrobe before "replacing the plant" with herself, never removing her jacket that is holding the earing.
Then of course, they add a scene with her trying to find the mate to the pearl earring, with Ann there, so that of course when Ann finds the pearl earing, her mind will go right to that memory of her sister losing a pearl earring.
And lest we forget, there is a scene where Ann accuses John of cheating and even asks if he is "effing" her sister, so she has already suspects them as fooling around.
On a side note, to see the dangly pearl earring, it soo reminde me of those tacky big 80's earrings they used to sell in those Merry-Go-Round type clothing stores..hardly looks like they cost a "Effing fortune"
