graham's past

what's the whole deal with elizabeth & who was she? i seemed to have missed this part when watching this film.

reply

That was Graham's gielfriend. Apparently,John slept with her when they were all in school together.

" If you want him - come and claim him!"

reply

No, I strongly believe that John didn't sleep with Elizabeth. I think it was just another lie (remember that he says that he is the second worst type of person (liars) AND the first (lawyers) when he argues with Cynthia)
He was also a pathological liar.

reply

I think you are right. I never thought of that ! Thanks!

reply

You're welcome ;)
I watched it 3 times in 2 days because I wanted to understand other points of view :)

reply

Just because somebody is a liar, it does not mean that they are lying all the time.

Otherwise, they liars are easy to spot.

But, thank you, I had not considered that it might be a lie.

Radiant Rose:
What I think is that he was not just a simple liar. He was a pathological liar. But of course mine was only an interpretation.

I think that John attacking Graham showed quite a lot of emotion, and was totally hypocritical!!!!!!!!!!! Whether or not he (G) beeped Ann or not! I think she would have looked guilty even if she did not quite succeed in curing his impotence.

reply

It is interesting.[yesindeedy!]

Nobody ever suspects the bat!

reply

Ok, So I really need to know what he was doing in the 9 years...Graham said he suffered from something in the last 9 years, I didn't get it!?

reply

impotence.

We cannot catwalk naked!

reply

lol
I got that...

reply

Its clear that John really did sleep with Elizabeth. Otherwise James Spader's character's epiphany at the end of the film is based on a lie

Hello drew 5927 and everyone. I think that since Graham was of the opinion (and apparently had former knowledge of) that John is also a liar (like Graham himself admitted to being) I think it's possible that Graham could have momentarily considered John's claim about Elizabeth was a deliberate lie, just to wound him. However, whether or not it was a lie or not is irrelevant to Graham's epiphany/recovery, nor the catalyst for it. Finally, after years of interviewing women about sex (instead of interacting with them sexually) he meets a woman who actually cares what HE thinks about sex and what HIS experiences have been. It's my interpretation that all the women who wound up in Graham's videos, he was maybe attracted to, but all of them (Cynthia included) were content to soak up Graham's flattering attention and to be the little stars of his private videos. Ann actually breaks through the shell of his life and genuinely wants to help Graham. She is drawn to him immediately, comes to care for him, falls for him I think, and doesn't just become another self-absorbed video interviewee like the women before her for 9 years. Ann is the catalyst that changes Graham's life, regardless of what John says happened with Elizabeth. Yeah, he might have been provoked in the moment by John's remarks, but I think Graham's violent reaction of throwing out all his tapes and smashing the camcorder is really based on these underlying factors: (1) he gets disgusted with himself and the way he's been living, (2) he's angry that Ann's tape's confidentiality was just violated by John, (3) he realizes John is a real scumbag and (4) there is absolutely no reason to not go after Ann...and save HER from a marriage that's a lie. He doesn't want to waste another moment living in a fantasy life, so he tosses out the tapes, which he no longer needs.

My two cents... :)

You've had an effect on my life.

That's totally possible and really interesting, never thought of that, but I don't think it was a lie. I think he was just lying all along. Pretending to be a good friend and really holding this horrible secret, just as he did with Ann and Cynthia.
