I Love James Spader

I know a lot of ya'll didn't like the movie, but I love it! I only got 3 hours of sleep b4 school so I could watch it! He just has this cuteness that I like! And I love when he is watching Ann when she is taking his hand and putting it on her face. Gosh he is sexy!

reply

I loved Sex, Lies & Videotape and fell for James Spader too! The subtely of his acting was amazing. Every time he touched Ann, I was wishing it was me. lol! He isn't a pretty boy but that's what makes him SOOO sexy! You can have Tom Cruise, I'll take James Spader any day of the week.

reply

I agree, I was never a Tom Cruise fan, the only movie I thought he did great acting in is Rainman with Dustin Hoffman. But I never felt attracted to him.
James Spader on the other hand. I first saw him that I took notice of his great acting was Boston Legal. I love how he plays Alan Shore.
And now I'm collecting his movies and he is a very sexy guy.
I to like that scene from this movie when he was laid back on the couch and she was running her hands through his hair and he was touching her I also wished it was me.
Usually I really don't like guys with that long of hair that he had in this film but on him he looked really good.
Love James Spader, if fantasies could come true and James Spader drove up to my house and asked if I'd ride off with him, I wouldn't even have to think twice, my ass would hop right into the passenger side of his car and ride off with him in his (Acura) heh heh!

Anyway, sorry my brain drifted a bit. Love James Spader.

reply

I actually fell for him in Stargate (saw that one first) but sex lies and videotape sealed the deal. I love the intimacy at the end between Ann and Graham, when he she sits next to him and he touches her arm...
Oh, heh, James Spader freaks:
Watch Secretary.

reply

no joke! i fell for him too in Stargate! Secretary is amazing.

He is just so yummy to watch.

reply

Secretary IS amazing, but if you want some super hot fetish Spader action, watch "Crash". Yikes, it's like a softcore porn in some spots! That movie has the definite potential to give you many happy dreams.

reply

Acually, I can't help but to notice that James Spader plays a lot of characters with odd fetishes. "Sex, Lies, and Videotape," "Crash," and "Secretary" are the biggest examples. The latest one is "Boston Legal," where his character has a thing with feet.

I'm not complaining, in fact, I love James Spader's acting as well. I'm just pointing out something I think is intresting.

reply

Yes, he really seems to enjoy showcasing the darker side of human nature. I love it and I wish that I could take off work for a month and stalk him =)

"I'm your SECRETARY"

reply

A lot of characters with weird fetishes, yes, but he does not seem to have done anything with full frontal nudity. Let me know if I am incorrect. Just because of my intellectual curiosity, you understand.

I wonder if an actress could become known for sex films without revealing everything (physically).

reply

Check out the flick where he's a guy who washes up on the beach and this woman takes him captive. I seem to remember there was some nudity in there. He grew up in a very free household in real life and seems to really love women I also noticed the fetish thing is in a lot of his movies as well. It's like a running theme in the parts he takes.

I like him a lot too. It's a shame about his hair, but I still think he's a pretty great actor and a gracious person too. Age, what a concept!

reply

I'll have to see Crash but add these great Spader movies Less Than Zero, little seen Bad Influence with Rob Lowe, Dream Lover and White Palace both sexy. Also, 2 Days in the Valley has a great cast. Secretary was weird but he was good.

reply

I was drawn to him when I watched the last season of "The Practice." Ever since then, I have seen a BUNCH of his movies. I loved this one so much I bought it. You're right that he has this cuteness about him. This movie rocks!!! I also liked Secretary a lot too. He has the cuteness that evolved differently since "Sex, Lies, and Videotape." I'm so ticked that the rest of the Boston Legal season was taken off until the fall. Grrrrrrrr. I miss my weekly Spader fix. I guess I'll have to make due with his movies.

"I outrank you." Brad Chase
"And I'm such a slut for authority." Alan Shore

reply

...he's so perfectly odd, and that weird smile-that's-not-a-smile thing he's got going on is yummy!!!!

reply

I couldn't agree with you more.

"And I'm such a slut for authority." Alan Shore

reply

He has an intensity in this film that's kind of scary. Perhaps women find this sexy. I thought he did a great job here. I went into this movie expecting little and ended up enjoying it.

reply

You'll probably like "White Palace" too.

reply

ooooh, daddy, he's scrumptioullummy in WHITE PALACE...hot, hot with Susan Sarandon ;-)!

reply

Oh my Lamont! I am in LOVE with James Spader, too! And I too, fell for him in Stargate. He is just such a sweetheart. He is also very much a sweetheart in this movie, too. I love him as Grahame. He is just so loveable. Plus he likes Iced Tea. He totaly rocks.

reply

I think he is sexy in Secretary! Anyone (if your a girl) who is a James Spader fan must go see this!

reply

He keeps running out of ingredients for iced tea, so he can't like it that much!

reply

All his characters are mysterious and sexy, and sometimes with a little shyness deepdown, which makes him even more attractive!

reply

I first started liking him becauses of "Stargate". Aaah, the irony.

He manages to come across as so virginal in that.

Someone is going to say, "Er, Rose, that is called ACTING!"

Sci fi: "Starcrossed", "Stargate", "Supernova", "Alien Hunter" and, fantasy not sci-fi, "Wolf". Two of these involved coloured contact lenses, someone suggested that maybe then is when he found out how much he hates them.

"Starcrossed" was released in the UK on video, e-bay and amazon sometimes have second hand copies. As with most of his best films, there is a strong brunette heroine.

reply

It's so funny, because my first James Spader encounter was Pretty In Pink, and for YEARS I avoided seeing his films, because he played the character so well, I really thought he was an ass...I mean, he was so convincing, I just assumed he actually was that way... :op But then I was procrastinating a few weeks ago and decided to watch this and was absolutely floored--I think he's my new favorite actor. I had such a crush on him after the first 3 viewings of this, that I decided to re-watch Pretty In Pink, to see if he still repulsed me in that, and, to my surprise, he still did...he's too talented! I just rented Secretary and LOVED it as well...I'm going to have to go on a little James Spader-a-thon now...hehe...I really like the way he speaks at different levels--so few actors really take advantage of the full range of speaking volumes to convey emotions; most actors just use "normal" speaking voices all the time, despite the fact that in reality, there are constant variances in volumes and inflections...anyway...amazing guy...

reply

Goodness, chelsea1440, that is taking things very literally to assume he was like Stef(f) in real life. Which I ruddy well hope he is not, otherwise I have been doing my best to boost the popularity of his work.
I wonder if anyone who saw him in "Stargate" thought he was as virginal as his character appeared when Sha'uri reveals her breasts (to him, her back is to the camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it would be non-libellous to assume that he was not a virgin at the time "Stargate" was filmed as he had been married for years and his wife had had at least one of their 2 sons by then. He had also appeared in quite a few sex scenes by then also, although I suppose a person could act in a sex scene and still be a virgin. Unless it was a hard core porn film of course.

reply

Well, so many actors basically play the same character--or at least elements of their personality come through all the characters they play (think: Sandra Bullock, Jude Law, Hugh Grant....most actors I can think of). And Spader was just SO convincing as the Steff, I figured that that was just his character--so few actors can so completely transform themselves as Spader does, I just didn't anticipate that he was this talented.

reply

Yes, he was good as Steff. Btw, did you wonder why he got landed with a girly name, Andy and her blonde nemesis Benny got boyish names, Ducky got called Ducky and Bla(i)ne got a name that, to quote Ducky, was not that of a human but of a household appliance?
I like it when someone responded to the "yoga" thread that I started on the J Spader board by saying they'd read an interview where Spader said he used to be a hippy. Had picture of confused hippy with flower tucked behind one ear plaintively asking his agent, "Why do you keep sending me to audition for all these roles as horrible people?"
Quite like that idea, actually. With the flower. Have no such proof that any such flower was worn. Just like the thought.

reply

This is funny to me, because I LOVED James Spader as Steff in Pretty in Pink. Don't get me wrong, he was a complete ass in that film, but it was hilarious--he played it to the hilt. One of my favorite parts is when he is blocking Andi's car door and trying to get her to go on a date with him. When she refuses, he pauses, puts a cigarette in his mouth and says "You're a bitch. You know, that condition of yours could get a lot worse." Hilarious! Oh, and the scene where he's rolling up a joint in his father's den after the party and says, "I think this one might finally kill the old man, Blaine." And the way he treats his bitch girlfriend like *beep* What makes the character so good is that he delivers his line in such a snarky, deadpan fashion, that only James Spader can really pull off. That's good acting for you, when the actor makes you love the character despite the fact that the character is an *beep*
Andrew McCarthy's character was so freaking annoying in that film, Andi should have gone with Duckie. But that's a topic for the Pretty in Pink board I suppose.

Oh, and don't get me started on Secretary! I can't help but think that if I was single and he was my boss, well.....I LOVE the part where he comes up behind Lee and slams the letter down on her desk and chastises her while almost touching her ear with his mouth...wow!

"I guess I started smoking when I was about...four."

Vfrance-1: did you deliberately choose his birthday to rave about him or was the 7 Feb date a happy coincidence? As this site uses US time, it may not even have been 7 Feb where you were. (I chose his birthday to review "sex, lies and videotape" for amazon.co.uk, let us hope they like it. There were 2 other customer reviews and they only gave it 3 stars! Out of 5. That is what I would have given it the first time I saw it, but now I think it deserves 5.

The only thing I would change about the film would be that I would ensure that Ann's job was something like recycling rubbish, or "garbage" as she would say.

I think Spader's gorgeous in "Pretty in Pink", but I think that it is sadly symbolic that Andie has to choose between (a) a gorgeous creep (b) a totally non-sexy nice guy and (c) a good-looking but very weak and unreliable guy. So like my life, no suitable men whatsoever. Maybe the pink is a cryptic symbol and she became a lesbian because of the lack of suitable men in the world! Do you think I should post that on the board?

reply

Actually, I happened to go to the IMDB home page and I saw his picture in the "today's birthdays" section. So I decided to post something in his honor.

I do know that John Hughes was pressured into the "Andi gets back together with Blaine" ending because of some really pedestrian test audiences, and he regretted it. He intended her to be with Duckie in the end. Honestly, I don't know if I would give Hughes that much credit that his film would be symbolic in any way--I enjoy some of his movies but they always have standard happy endings.

It seems that the "bad guy" is often the most desirable in films/TV--on Twin Peaks, for example, Laura Palmer has two boyfriends: belligerent smart-ass punk Bobby Briggs and sentimental, vanilla biker dude James Hurley--well, Bobby Briggs is FAR more desirable than the annoying James--I love Bobby Briggs! Actually, this also goes to illustrate the difference between directors like John Hughes and David Lynch--in Twin Peaks, unlike Steff in PIP, Bobby wasn't really an *beep* he just had that facade.

I looooove James Spader
Got hooked on to this stupendous actor during the last season of the Practice and then started renting his movies- he simply amazes me in Pretty in Pink. And this one just BLOWS ME AWAY. What acting! I'm somthing like his roles u know....gorgeous creep..hence the admiration I guess

reply

i feel in love in stargate like everyone elese but the one you have to see is "speaking of sex" he so cute. it reminds me of secretary but, much funnier.

reply

I thought "Speaking of Sex" was very funny although it got terrible reviews. I also thought he was great in it but then I find him great in most of his movies.

Spader was sex on legs right up until the time of Secretary...don't know what happened since then...needs to lay off the pies a bit.

Still got those lovely long eyelashes though...and still a fantastic actor.

reply

He still looked good in 'I Witness', 'Alien Hunter' and 'Shadow of Fear'. I've said it before but I think it's the short hair and the way he holds himself in 'Boston Legal' that makes him look a tad pudgy (at least that's what I hope.)

I agree, though, about the lovely long eyelashes and that he's a fantastic actor.

reply

They worked together on 3 films: Striking Back, aka The New Kids, Keys to Tulsa and 2 Days in the Valley, plus the full length TVM A Killer in the Family, where they played brothers, and the shorter TV project Greasy Lake.

Spader is undeniably sexy. He was great in this film, such a subtle performance. Very effective. Loved the way Graham interacted with Ann, fabulous chemistry from the outset in my opinion.
And the ending...when he runs his hand up and down her arm...

White Palace and Secretary are also brilliant films. I have yet to see Crash though!

Why can't we say goodbye in public?

reply

I love him too, but I wish he would lose a few pounds. There are plenty of actors his age who are trim. He needs to start working out and watch his diet. I'm surprised his agent doesn't encourage him to take better care of himself. Same for Leonardo De Caprio -an adorable actor when he wasn't so chunky.

reply

[deleted]

I love him as well! I know sex, lies and videotape inside and out, from beginning to end.

Does anybody remember his nerdier roles in Mannequin and an episode of Seinfeld?? Also, for Pretty in Pink, I read somewhere that he thought it would be funny if he played that character as a 30-year-old in high school. So brilliant.

reply

Yes, I remember them!

I also liked him in Supernova. There is only one moment where he does his annoying facial tic thing which sometimes he overdoes (see Curtain Call. I also like his hair in Supernova even though not usually fan of short hair.
