... or what the hell is he doing in life in the first place? Or what brings him to Baton Rouge? If he's seeking closure with Elizabeth, why didn't he at least contact her?
It's never explained in the movie. Graham is pretty much a carte blanche. And, cinematically speaking, this is probably a good idea, since we know so much about the other three characters. This imbalance creates tension.
If you read the printed screenplay with Soderbergh's diary on the production, it was originally planned to indicate that Graham got all the cash he hides in his mattress from a settlement from a car wreck. The Elizabeth angle (his motive for coming to Baton Rouge) was also greatly enlarged, but Soderbergh decided in the end to streamline the material so as to focus on the four principals. I personally think he should have ommitted any reference to the unseen Elizabeth as its inclusion in the finished product looks like an afterthought.
shareIt's been six years since you asked this question, but I'm glad you did! I'm wondering the same thing in 2020. The reply below about Graham getting the money after a car wreck makes total sense, and I figured something like that was a possibility, but I wish it was explained just a bit.
In the absence of any such clues, I came up with a theory of my own, and now I can't stop thinking about it: What if he made his money selling copies of the tapes??? The tapes seem to be his main asset, and while he says he doesn't show them to anyone, he also says he's a pathological liar...
