Orgasm. Out of character?

Anyone else think it was way out of character for Sally to unleash an earth-shattering fake orgasm in public like she did?

Sally’s a mild-mannered, somewhat buttoned-up ‘practical’ type. I think the movie needed one or two moments showing she was prone to public silliness before this.

Clearly it was the right decision to include it because it’s probably the most legendary scene in the mother of all rom-coms, it just feels jarring on reflection.

I don't think so. Harry has an effect on Sally unlike everyone else. She's buttoned up as you mentioned, but he just irks her in a way no one else does.

So, I think it does make sense that she's so comfortable around him that she doesn't guard herself as much as she did with everyone else. Just a thought.

Mmyeah, I get her being comfortable with Harry but I still don’t buy her creating a scene orgasming in front of dozens of strangers, you’d have to be extraordinarily flamboyant and eccentric to do that, or uncontrollably drunk/high, but for buttoned-up Sally to unleash that at lunchtime in Katz’s Deli? Doesn’t fit the character.

But as I say, the filmmakers knew what they were doing bc it has become an iconic scene.

reply

That's fair. I'm watching it now because it's so good.

reply

I agree. But not the first few times I watched this back when it was new. But I just rewatched it today and I was thinking the same thing! Meg’s character was wayyy too reserved to pull something like that in public, or anywhere. But fuck it, the joke landed and like you said, it’s the most memorable thing in the whole movie.
