Why is ambulance spelled backwards on the truck at the end?

it's written like that on every ambulance. it's so when an ambulance comes up behind you while your driving with it's siren's on, you can look in the rearview mirror and read it right away and move out of the way.

That has always cracked me up. As if we couldn't never have figured out what that vehicle is without reading the word "AMBULANCE". The flashing lights don't provide any sort of a clue...

This is not on-topic with the original query but I wonder if The Simpsons got the gag about the stretcher falling out the back of it from WAB. If not, how old is this gag?

I never think about the future, it comes soon enough
