Why were they on a boat?

Okay. This is a movie about a man who's killed, and two sociopaths carry around his dead body for 90 minutes... I understand that it's not supposed to make sense the whole time.

I get that.

Honestly.

But why the hell did they get on Bernie's boat? What were they trying to do? They weren't going anywhere in particular, they were just screwing around in the marina, and then driving around the coastline. There are murderers chasing them, and they're carrying around a dead body (for some reason), and they decide to get on a boat, and dick around? After about 15 minutes of screen time, the boat runs out of gas, they swim back to shore using Bernie as a flotation device, and the scene is NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN.

Don't get me wrong here. I thought the scene was pretty funny. I laughed at all the appropriate times... I just don't understand why they were on the boat.

Why were they on a boat?

They were trying to get off the island. They missed the ferry and there was no other way off.

The reason they swam back to shore was because they'd have drowned if they tried to swim the other way.

They were trying to get off the island to escape the murderer but they missed the ferry, so they decided to take Bernie's boat to get off, but they ran out of gas so they had to swim back. The reason they were taking Bernie everywhere with them is because they heard on the answering machine that they weren't to kill them while Bernie was around, so they figured that if they carried Bernie around with them the murderer wouldn't kill them.
