Take the money? No-one would have known........all the cops know is there's a dead guy. They wouldn't have known about the stolen money without the note that Bernie wrote.... why didn't they just take the briefcase and destroy the note? If this hadn't been a comedy, when the credits were rolling I would have just been screaming "why didn't you take the money?" Luckily I was too busy still chuckling to myself about this awesome movie to do that but it did really bug me. Towards the end of the movie when they had to go back to Bernie's house to get the keys to the boat, I was sure that would be the moment where they'd say "Wait... why don't we take the money?" But then they didn't.

So I ask again, why didn't they take the money?

Right, because up to that point this movie was totally plausible.

Maybe they did. But this was terrible anyway. A stupid comedy that didn't work.

They didn't know who the money belonged to. They did know somebody was going to try to kill them, and they probably figured that stealing money that belongs to somebody like that was a bad idea. They didn't know bwho knew about it, but knew that somebody besides Bernie knew exactly who they were.
