Basket of cats?

I'm watching it right now on Chiller. At the very beginning when the warlock is imprisoned, they say they are going to kill him then burn his body over a basket of cats. What the heck is that about? I've never heard of anything like that. What is the importance of the cats? Is it because they are considered familiars?

To be clear, they never stated that they burn the cats, I always took it to mean that they hanged him over them and then burned him alone.

Maybe it's just my wishful thinking, the alternative is just too aweful to think about. :(

In the intro, you can actually see them put the basket onto the pile of wood.

Cats are the guardians of the under world. In most movies that deal with curses and spells and things of that nature they are feared by the vilian. Just like in the mummy.

In the novel it is made clear that the live cats will be burned too. Cats may have been seen as protection against evil in ancient Egypt, but in western Christian folklore cats were associated with Satan and were seen as witches’ familiars. Interestingly this belief does not come from the bible, as it never even mentions domestic cats.
