...Redferne wasn't a warlock, just a 17th century witch hunter, right? So I can understand how a warlock could project himself into the 20th century, but how did Redferne get there?

He just got sucked into the time vortex, apparently.

Guess you're right. But I think it would have been nice if that was shown.

It was. It is even shown in the trailer. When the warlock disappears, you see Redferne move into that space and one should assume he disappeared right after, even though it was not shown.
