Where Stallone played the more rumpled "cowboy cop" and Russell played the more slick, conservative cop. I would imagine Sylvester Stallone's role in Cobra (which could be considered his version of Dirty Harry mixed in with Beverly Hills Cop) would pretty much be what he would be like as Gabriel Cash. Likewise, I believe that Kurt Russell's character in Tequila Sunrise is essentially how I would've imagined him as Ray Tango.
shareI'd say your supposition is pretty accurate; they could've traded places, but I like the roles Russell and Stallone had as was, and I'm quite fond of this film in general.
shareI think Russel was spot on. But as for myself, I didn't care for Stallone as the prim and proper officer. He's more the rough and tough type.

they didn't really even stick to their characters. I mean Stallone's prim and proper more conservative cop ignores orders in the opening scene of the film and recklesslesly stands infront of an oncoming truck and opens fire. then shoots at a fuel truck" near another cops head to expose the cocaine. hes more reckless than Russels character
why is he a by the books guy? cause he wears a suit and tie and has glasses? little more actual character building, and some clashing before the setup would have made it superior. they meet, get busted 3 minutes later then are all of a sudden best buds?
in an alternative universe this is a really good movie with actually distinct developed characters I care about. as it stands im watching things just happen and two basically nameless traitress indistinguishable from each other heros do things cause the plot has to keep going
it work either way. both sly and kurt can play blue/white collars well.
sly must be ray tango. he is biggest character and sly suit this and kurt suit cash.
