Shop named after the film.

In Liverpool, there's a Sandwich shop called 'Shirley Valentine's'. It makes the most incredible food. I haven't seen the film so I'm failing to see the connection really. Any thoughts?

In the film, Shirley escapes to the Greek Islands on holiday and winds up deciding to stay there rather than to return to her old, colorless life as a homemaker in Manchester. (At the end of the film it is left to our imaginations whether she actually returns to the U.K.) Anyway, while on holiday she takes a job as a waitress at the local Greek cafe. A British couple come in and can't find anything appealing on the menu, so Shirley offers to whip up a meal of chips and egg for them. They are thrilled and return several times for the same meal. I can only assume that perhaps the sandwich shop owners in Liverpool imagine that Shirley eventually returned to her homeland and opened a restaurant. :-)

I don't imagine there has to be a connection, other than the general Liverpool one (it was set in Liverpool, not Manchester, BabyFlan). Writer Willy Russell is a well-known local figure.

Where in Liverpool is this sandwich shop, anyway? I've never noticed it.

Sorry about that, Billy. It's been a while since I've seen the film and thought that Shirley lived in Manchester. Either way, it's a wonderful story. Thanks for clarifying!

The shop is on Mount Pleasant, just off Lime Street. Not far from Adelphi Hotel.

Aha. I just saw the sandwich shop the other day while walking up to the Philharmonic.

Our Day Out is an amusing play about a school trip. It was made into a film for the BBC in the 1970s, but I doubt it is available. It has been repeated at least once on British TV.

Maybe it seemed like Manchester because when she is on the verge of boarding the plane, they say it is going to Manchester.
