shareIt's about bloody time! I've written to the studio to ask when they were going to release this movie on DVD and no one ever responded to me. I love this movie! That girl's got hootzpa! I tok her advice and went to Vegas on my own during a stressful time in my life and I had the time of my life...alas, no rocking of the boat, but the spa was great! Thanks, Shirl!
shareBEWARE! When this was released in the UK, it WASN'T in widescreen, despite what the cover said, and some lines were dubbed from UK references to US ones in that oh so patronising way, I'm sure you still get the joke, no need to butcher a great script! So guys, if you buy it... keep the receipt!
shareSilly Previous Post !!!! Widescreen or Full Screen, people will buy this Great Film !!!
shareYeah, it'll still be better than VHS (and my VHS has the stupid dubbing, too, so I'm *almost* used to it)
shareThe American VHS tape, laserdisc, and undoubtedly the DVD will all have the American version with the dubbed lines in the audio. The British tape apparently kept the original script basically intact, but the region 2 DVD is the American version. There really are very few changes, and they have been detailed in other threads. However, I bought a British 16mm film copy that has all the lines intact, not the American version.
As for the full frame version. Nothing is missing, as the film apparently was shot full aperature. You simply get more picture showing top and bottom that would have been shown if they had cropped it for the transfer. This actually looks nicer for the credits. It is not really a problem in my opinion, but I'll bet the American DVD version is cropped.
Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

Well folks I just watched the new release and can say it is much better than the UK DVD version(I have both). Not only is it in widescreen but even more wonderful is your choice of US or UK 5.1 sound. If you listen to the UK version all the original lines are intact..no dubbing at all. Very very pleased.

I usually do not add to the boards, but will step-up to the plate when it comes to this gem of a film.
Since 1990, the name "Shirley Valentine" has remained off my "missing persons list". It is a film that speaks to that quiet voice within, for both male and female, when one realizes there is that special part of you which has been lost along the way. I am a 35 year old male, but in 1990, at 19, it saw me through a rough time in my life.
I bought the DVD on May 1st, and although it took Best Buy a while to locate it in the store, I was happy to be reunited with this treasure.
The downside with the DVD itself is that it contains no extras whatsoever, and with the exception of the UK Audio option, offers little to die-hard fans who yearn for the insights of the writer/director/actors.
Yet like an old friend, it brings warmth to see Pauline Collins performance presented with widescreen clarity, and to see the integrity of the film remain intact.
I know I sound like a sap, but I am glad the DVD of "Shirley Valentine" has finally made it to our shores (US), and I am proud to call this film a classic!
. . . and is anyone else who is reacquainting thesmelves with SV via the DVD surprised to see Absolutely Fabulous' Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) and LOTRs Theoden (Bernard Hill) as Shirley's schoolmate Marjorie and her husband Joe?
shareThats Yosser Hughes from 'Boys from the Blackstuff' that is. His two best lines were "Gissajob" and "..I hope you've got a good Dentist! ". Ha ha, kept me amused for years that did. Hard but fair was our Yosser ! He also played the Captain of the 'Titanic' beard and all, bravely going down with his ship.
shareI just got the US DVD. It has both the US and UK soundtracks, and both US and UK subtitles. You can mix and match as you please.
