No skull on the chest is actually pretty bold

When you consider how much fan service there is these days, the fact that they just said "f#%k it" to the skull on his chest is incredibly bold. The skull shows up in subtle ways which is actually pretty bad ass.

Even though they bought Marvel's catalog back then and had the rights, New World Pictures didn't really know much about THE PUNISHER and an executive even passed on the project initially when Boaz Yakin first approached them before Robert Mark Kamen convinced them to do it. Yakin fought hard for the skull but ultimately they didn't have any idea of what it could do marketing wise and comic books weren't big among Hollywood people back then so they often tried to reach out beyond the fans and went for more "realistic" and gritty costumes.

What other projects did New World work on from Marvel? I know they had Nick Fury, which resulted in the tv film in 1998. They produced Generation X. What else?

If I didn’t talk the way I talk I wouldn’t know who the hell I am, Sean Connery on his accent

They did an X-MEN cartoon show, but most of their projects didn't get made as not only they realised they technically couldn't do them properly but Marvel and the then New World, were sold to people who weren't interested in developing and producing feature films...

When they bought Marvel in 1986, New World also didn't know the deal didnt include SPIDER-MAN and CAPTAIN-AMERICA. They still tried to get them back from Cannnon but with no success...

Yea, they did do a lot of the 90s cartoons and a failed Power Pack pilot. Ironically, the original New World founder, Roger Corman produced the 94 F4 film for a different company.

Corman had sold New World in 1983 and formed Concorde.

I read the story but don't remember how he still managed to get the rights to do the FANTASTIC FOUR (which he ultimately had to do in a rush not lose the rights and more money)

Dunno if he had the rights or not, Constantin or whatever did and still does. Fox only distributes.

It was actually a pretty dumb idea not to include the skull. It wouldn't have hurt the film at all if he had the symbol on his chest.

reply

And the fact that there is no skull doesn't hurt the film either...

reply

It would have been cool if they at least showed him wearing it at the end - whether in the entire last sequence or the movie's final shot. Either way, the movie is certainly not affected by this omission (or is it?).

You want something corny? You got it!

The thing to remember is that at the time The Punisher (1989) was made, the character in the actual comics wasn't wearing street clothes (leather jackets, trenchcoats, trousers/jeans, combat boots, etc) with either a t-shirt or body armour bearing the skull symbol - that look came later. No, back in 1989 Frank Castle was still wearing the 1970s skin-tight superhero costume he'd debuted in, complete with white opera gloves and matching knee-high boots. I think the Punisher fans who complain about the lack of the skull in this movie forget (or are unaware of) how ridiculous that costume was.
