What soured the grounds?

I don't have time to read the book (FT student) but would like to know what spoiled the grounds to make the dead come back alive instilled with such evil.

While solely watching the movie, I initially got the impression that the Micmac Indians were the ones to sour the ground. Jud gave the impression that they happily used the magical land to raise people from the dead (now, how did THAT happen, in the movie's universe?), but eventually they got the idea that sometimes dead was better, and then the land soured. I took it that they soured it--i.e., cursed it.

Part of that curse could be that anything brought back from the dead via the burial grounds would be angry and resentful about it, especially toward the one who buried it. Thus, Louis's family's actions would make sense. (And the Ramones closing credit song would sorta fit.)

However, googling this issue shows that the mythical demonic creature known as the Wendigo is what contaminated the Micmac's sacred burial ground by bestowing the zombie resurrection powers upon it in the first place. This is what drove the Micmac from the area, before the White men moved in and inherited the nasty plot of land.

Part of that souring was also the seductive, beckoning nature of the burial ground. It craved new corpses, so people who recently lost loved ones were drawn there.

Some even theorize that it facilitates the death of those loved ones in order to secure those corpses.

But it all goes back to the Wendigo. Some myths say that the creature was originally a fellow Native American who, after famine or exile, starved and became an unsatiable cannibal. Some say that the creature would grow in proportion to the size of its meal, so that it never felt full. This hunger apparently lives on through the soured Micmac burial ground.

(The impossible-to-please Wendigo could also be said to be the spirit behind the thieving, materialistic White man who took the land from the Red man. But that goes far beyond the movie...)

The Wendigo "soured" the ground eventually, but the Micmacs did stop using it because they realized dead is better. I'd love to see a prequel to this movie starting out with the Micmacs, then to how Stanley Bouchard found out about the ground and finishing at the Timmy Baterman story.

The reanimated bodies aren't zombies, they are dead corpses possessed by demons/evil spirits and they are basically similar to Deadites from Evil dead movies as they come back as demons who return to torment the living.

In the book, it mentioned that when there was a harsh winter and food stores were low, they would find someone from the tribe that was "all used up and there were be stew for a while". The micmacs buried the remains of someone they had cannibalized in the burial ground - The Mic Macs thought this is what caused the ground to go sour, but it was the Wendigo that caused the ground to go sour.

Ever since that, the spirit of the wendigo would touch a member of the tribe while they were sleeping and it gave that person a taste for human flesh.

The ground was soured by possessed Micmac Indians who got touched by a Wendigo spirit demon as some members of the tribe killed those possessed members, thus the ground got soured because of the dead bodies of the Wendigo touched dead corpses in it. The Wendigo cursed the area as well with it's dark magic, for whatever dead corpse buried in that ground will be reanimated as a possessed former shell of itself or a cannibal.

The Wendigo possessed the dead corpses of Timmy Batterman, Gage, Rachel and Gus (in the film version's sequel) as they became demons with the Wendigo spirit inside of them especially with yellow eyes with some growls/snarls including knowing other people's skeletons in their closets with other secrets. Gage did ate his mother after he killed her as the Wendigo inside him was hungry, same for Gus who ate all those rabbits. While other spirits/demons of the soured ground possessed other dead humans like in PS 2 and the animals that were buried in it including Church who became a minion of the Wendigo demon. The reanimated possessed corpses come back as demons who return to torment the living and are like Deadites in a way.
