Fred Gwynne as Jud Crandall

The movie has its faults and it certainly isn't as good as the novel, BUT casting Gwynne in this role was absolutely perfect. They couldn't have found someone who fit the character from the novel better.

Agreed, they did a great job casting Gwynne.

Then they all had to go on vacation or something and grabbed Dale Midkiff's name out of a hat.

I totally agree, Fred Gwynne is amazing in this movie.

I agree! Fred Gwynne was perfectly cast as Jud Crandall.
I also thought Miko Hughes was well-cast as Gage, he had the right *innocent tyke* look.

Even the casting of a (male) actor as Zelda was surprisingly cool!

But Louis & Rachel...even Ellie.....ugh.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

Ellie was okay, but Louis & Rachel, my god. If there were an award for blandest movie couple ever, they would probably win hands down. They looked like they were sleepwalking through the movie.

But Ellie in the scene right after Gage's death, when she's crying on the couch...wow that was bad acting! I cannot believe the director didn't demand another take on that one.

I cringe at that scene every time...and at Louis' stony stare during it.
I get he's supposed to be 'in shock' but Midkiff cannot pull it off.

I still think the parents were much worse. Ellie might have been bad in any other movie, but compared to the parents, she seems like Vivien Leigh here.

I haven't read the novel, but I loved Gwynne's performance.

Yes very true to character novel-wise.

I guess I'm the lone person in the world who didn't mind Louis or Rachel, but my goodness Ellie....now she was downright awful. Can't say as I've seen her in anything since, but if she hasn't it's for a damn good reason.

He's so amazing in this movie that I totally forgot about Herman Munster. He played that character for years, but played Jud for less than two hours, and yet Jud's the character I most associate with him. That's perfect casting and acting. He did a great job, even pulling of the accent and seeming friendly/sinister at the same time.

reply

If he had lived a little longer than he had I think he would have found that this role really helped him shed the role of Herman Munster that he had tried to escape for so many years. I love Gwynne in this movie, such a phenomenal performance!

I agree he was perfect for the role.

A few years later, he also gave a memorable performance as Judge Haller in My Cousin Vinny (1992).

You got your mind right, Luke?

Fred Gwynne was very good in the role of Jud Crandall. I was especially amused at his response to Ellie's naughty language. This was just before Gage was ran over by the truck.

reply

He was mostly good, but sometimes he was mumbling enough to where I had to turn CC on to figure out what he said.
