This film has made me cry more than any other (spoilers)

For a relatively unknown or at least underrated 80s horror movie, jesus christ it packed an emotional punch. The poor child dying such a horrific death I DID NOT see coming. Those photo stills had me inconsolable. The *beep* disastrous funeral set me off again, then basically everything after that with all the trauma and pain had me in floods of tears again. This is one of the most emotional films I have ever seen OH MY GOD how is this not listed as one of the biggest tearjerkers of all time? Forget Titanic etc this film breaks your soul.

Yeah now that I watch this as an adult it got me a bit teary when he died and the photos flashed :/

. . . Especially since, if you look, the photos are laying on the road as if to say those happy memories were taken by the road too.

I never noticed the pics were laying on the road! Thanks for point that out.

Yeah, that part always bothered me badly. Listening to Rachel screaming "Get the baby" gets me every time, then they show his little shoe. It was just heartbreaking to watch. It didn't help that they casted such an angelic looking child.

I found it sad too. Losing a child would be so hard!

I think that's the point, this is not a regular horror. This is a realistic-unrealistic horror about how far people would go to avoid their grief and bring back someone they love.

I saw an interview with Stephen King and he said this was the hardest book he ever wrote. He never dreamed it would be a movie.

Yeah, I can't watch this movie following that picnic scene before Gage's death. It's just overwhelmingly depressing. That little boy losing his life like that, seeing his small casket and tiny hand dangle out of it after it falls over........the grandfather giving the father a well deserved punch. (allthough it wasn't the time or place).
You're right, this is a horror movie that unexpectedly sad. Watching it now that I'm older definitely makes me see that.

I will be honest with myself, I've read the book and seen the movie and I still think that if there was such a place, that I might do the same thing if certain people in my life died. Hoping that it would be different this time. I think some others would too, especially those who lose a child.

"The poor child dying such a horrific death I DID NOT see coming".

You mean, it wasn't, like, telegraphed virtually the moment they got to their new home some 3 minutes into the film?

"The beep disastrous funeral set me off again".

Me too - the definite comedic highlight of the film due to mistimed hammy acting by the parties involved.

Try reading the book. It's a thousand times darker than the movie.

It stayed with me for a long time after the credits rolled when I was a teenager. That said there is quite a lot wrong with the film particularly the casting of Dale Midkif as Louis Creed. In my opinion Fred Gwynne just about holds the movie together.

It's all a deep end.
