Also the scene where his dad is wrestling him for the scalpel is hilarious, that kid had 10 pounds on him and managed to slash him 10 times, common! OK, perhaps he was possessed by an evil Indian spirit or Zelda or whatever but some laws of physics should still apply.
Yeah I'll admit that bugged me a bit too. I know we had to suspend disbelief a bit, but that was pushing it.

There is a hell of a lot of suspension of disbelief going on that ultimately makes no effing sense. (I still like the movie though even though it's hokey as hell at times.)
Well Gage was actually possessed by the Wendigo that soured the ground along time ago according to the book. Wendigos are cannibalistic Native American demon spirit tricksters who's touch can turn humans into cannibals and the Wendigo in the PS novel cursed the ground and turned any dead corpse into a demon and possess them.
Basically they are semi-deadites.
