It's just so depressing..

I think this movie gets harder to watch as you get older. Everything's okay at first and then it just spirals down into darkness, it's like a nightmare and you want to wake up from it.

I'm currently reading the book and reviews on the back say it's Stephen Kings scariest book. At the beginning of my copy King wrote how he came up with the story. It's similar to Louis Creed. He was teaching in Maine and he has a similar experience as seen with Gage. His young son is almost killed by a car. They had also rented a house and on a busy highway. He was warned about the busy road and told to watch his kids. His neighbor actually says "That road uses up a lot of animals." King then saw near their home was a Per Sematary. Kings daughters cat killed and buried in the cemetery. All this combined got him thinking "What if?"

For me personally as a teen the movie was just a good creepy movie. But as a parent and seeing a parent lose a child the movie gets to me. What if you could bring a loved one back?

I'd say that is what makes a good story. People can relate to it and also put themselves in the situation. That's make this movie scary for me. I hoping the book is just as good scarier.

Are you guys joking?
I finished the book yesterday and watched the movie today. They are both equally disappointing. In the book nothing happens for 3/4 of it (at page 350 his cat finally dies); the movie looks more like an extended Twilight Zone episode (was Louis fighting a doll?)

I absolutely agree with you. I read the book over the past few days and was never scared or shocked. Now of course, I did see the movie when it came out back in 89, so maybe I would have been more affected by it had I not known the kid gets killed. I have the same issue I have with all of King's books: just too damn long, too much build-up. I still count the two scariest books I've ever read as "Misery" and "The Shining," but I read both of those as a teen. I TRIED to watch the movie again on cable a couple of weeks ago, but Denise Crosby's acting was SO BAD I had to turn it off.

I only saw it once, back in the early 90s, and I also found it to be one of the most depressing films ever, starting with the boy getting hit by the semi. From there it's just a downward descent into hopeless darkness. Of course, it is a horror flick and -- if that's what the filmmakers were shooting for -- then I guess it's "good." But I don't want to see it again.
