Is this the film....

...where the girl is sitting in the bath tub and is looking at a photograph of a man (her father, presumably) and then the man's neck becomes distorted and his face zooms into the camera lens in a really scary manner?

Yeah, same here. I'm not the kind of guy who gets scared easily but that scene really was scary. Probably the scariest scene I've ever seen in a film (along with a scene from The Ring, though I can't specifically remember what it was). It really did leave me with goosebumps the rest of the night.I was only about 14 or 15 when I watched it so if I had watched it today for the first time it may not have have elicited such a strong reaction. Still, it probably would have made me jump, nevertheless. I hate those kind of horror films that involve reflections being distorted or photographs suddenly doing something unexepected :-) I think those are the scariest types. Forget ghosts, vampires, zombies, etc. They don't do anything for me.

I was trying to remember the name of the film the other night, I thought it was called The Paper Boy but then I found out that it was Paperhouse.

To be honest, the photograph scene was the only one that I could remember. Scared the living s*** out of me at the time. That's probably why it stayed in my memory. You generally tend to remember things which are vivid and emotional.
But I mean, this is what I call a truly scary film. Very rarely can you say that a horror film is scary. It's normally just gory and that's it. Although it's only a 15 rated film, in my humble opinion I think it should be 18, simply because it's so disturbing. No one who has seen the film can tell me that they didn't find some parts of it nerve-wracking. I wouldn't believe them if they said that. I just purchased it today because I just have to see that film again.

Have you ever watched Jacob's Ladder? That has a couple of scary scenes in it, aswell.

jacobs ladder is the most disturbingly visual film i've ever seen, it was way beyond its time, and never got the credit it deserved. if u like your films that dont feed the story to you on a plate, and keep u wondering days, weeks, years later. own it. like paperhouse, theres a heart and soul behind every chilling scene. they just dont/cant make em like they used to.

Oh that bit is horrible. Your memory is a little bit off though... you need to watch it again... *grin*

A couple of months ago I was over at a friend's house and it was late and dark and from the other side of the room totally unexpected I hear "I just remembered that bath bit from "Paperhouse"." then of course *I* did and got scared but couldn't stop thinking about it!

I can't stand things jumping at the camera or slowly aproaching the camera (when you just *know* they might just jump at you) - so see also the "Anna! I'm blind!" bit in this and *That Scene* in "Ring".

Holy crap I'm glad I'm not the only one that was scared witless by that scene. I saw this movie when I was 10, when it came out. That scene STILL sticks with me and I remember being extremely frightened.

Dang, now I have to find where I taped this movie. I loved the film, but don't remember any startling bathtub scene. Now the part where her drawn dad comes to the paperhouse, I could never forget that! I made my roommates watch this with me and the art student pointed out that the real version of the house was in perfect perspective for Anna and consequently too small for adults. She thought that was cool.
