I don't know but I would love to see a really nice special edition of this film. I picked up the Region 2 DVD and it isn't bad but I would have liked more extras.

reply

well im taking by your name you live in america , where did you purchase yours?

I actually got my DVD from amazon.uk for a really decent price. I think it converted to about $15.00.

reply

ok thanks. so it works, you are able to watch it in the U.S.A ?

Well I believe Americans should be able to watch a PAL DVD on their computers (if it has a DVD drive too), providing they can get past the R2 encoding?

Unfortunately most Americans won't be able to watch it on their main TV Sets because America is very insular and doesn't generally provide PAL conversion technology in the TV products available in the country.

Where as in the UK, we can happily watch NTSC video's or R1 NTSC DVD's (if you have multi-region DVD or are able to reprogramme it, most can!) and most of the TV Sets available are capable of handling NTSC signals as well as PAL as standard too.

Well to be honest your probably much better off where you are as we pay far too much for our petrol, paedophiles and murderers seem to get away with their crimes, there's little work, there's no real British Industry or major British car manufacturers now (even the Mini is now German!) and the crime rate is soaring up.

Well okay there are lots of good things about living in the UK too, but there's also lots to be unhappy about also!

Excessive use of punctuation isn't one I gather.

Is the re-release a carbon-copy of the original release, or have they re-mastered it? because I don't like the image cleaning they did to the original DVD release, there's motion smear where there shouldn't be, look closely at her face when she's in closeup and you'll see some parts are (incorrectly) staying still while the rest is moving.

Playing other-region, even PAL, DVDs on an American TV isn't that hard. There are a number of DVD players that have codes to enable playing of all regions, and some convert PAL to NTSC. Some of these players are quite cheap. Mine is a Philips, model # DVP642/37, bought for about sixty or seventy bucks a year ago at Walmart. It says nothing on the packaging or instruction manual about being capable of playing other regions, but be assured that feature is present and does work. I've a handful of PAL DVDs from different regions, they all play beautifully on my NTSC tv.

1. power unit up.
2. open disc tray (no button on the remote but if you press and hold down the Stop button, the tray will open).
3. using the remote: press "7", "8", "9", "OK", "0" (the last number being the machine's region setting; 0 for all). You should see a small "0" appear towards the bottom left corner of your tv screen.

There are others if this one ias no longer in production or being stocked. Run a search for models and codes.

I know it might seem extravagant to buy another DVD plyaer, but I've discovered it's helpful to have a 2nd one for backup. Players are so finicky that often when a typical R1 disc won't play right in one, it works fine in another. Saves having to return 'em.

thanks , is there another code or anything to disable that code so i can watch regular regioned dvds again, or is this a really stupid question?

No, once you've done that all DVDs are playable. I have to try to remember what the instructions were to make sure the PAL-to-NTSC is communicating from player to tv properly - it's ion the setup for the machine, and I guessed correctly (but there are people I can ask if it comes to it)...but these are instructions specific to that model. I'm not a tech person, so I only know what I'm told by others! (There's no stupid questions!)

Best to ask around for advice on the net about which models are current and best, and what the codes are. This one may still be available. Just be sure you get one that translates PAL to NTSC.

Edit: Ah, yes, I found it. "You should also go through the player's menu and select "NTSC" on the video menu (which also has PAL and Multi as choices), assuming your TV can only play NTSC formatted discs - this will allow you to watch both PAL and NTSC discs on your TV."

This way the player will play both PAL and NTSC, but the signal it sends to the tv will be NTSC. I'd had to ask about that one, because the manual doesn't explain.

Alrighty, thank you very much

Well i'm able to play region 1 NTSC discs without any problem on my 4 year old LG DVD Player as I converted it to multi-region via the codes made available on this site:-
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

And I've been able to get region 1 copies of movies that haven't been released in the UK (probably never will?), from companies like Amazon or Play.Com/USA and I find it odd and slightly annoying that a few of the movies I've tracked down are in fact British Classics!

Well they all play perfectly on my DVD player as the code works a treat and my TV set is up to handling the NTSC signal too, at least it works fine from my video (I have one NTSC movie on VHS), but I think my DVD Player actually converts it to PAL anyway?

So check out that site and see if your DVD Player is listed and can be converted to multi-region!

The TV isn't the issue, it's the DVD player, you can get a fantastic DVD player for 45 bucks (or a cheap one for 25) that does PAL to NTSC conversions, and region hacking a player is super easy. Videohelp.com explains how to do everything.

I can see why you guys would need to buy R1 NTSC discs over there, ye gods are new movies expensive over there or what, even with the amazon.co.uk price stuff that was released fairly recently like Little Miss Sunshine costs like 28 bucks (14 pounds, we don't have that symbol on our keyboards); plus they take forever to come out with movies on DVD, stuff that came out a month ago here has a June release on that site.

reply

We don't have the key but you can make the £ symbol. Simply hold ALT and enter 0163 on your number pad. Not sure if NumLock has to be on or off. Another nifty ALT-code is 0162 which is ¢.

Thanks for all the info. I might pick this DVD up if the price goes low enough. Don't care much for special features, I just saw this movie way back in the day and would like to have it in my collection. I watch movies on my computer, and my next TV will be an HD set I can use as a monitor, so region coding doesn't concern me.
