Why not on DVD, Remake??

I feel in love with this film when it first came on cable, I was about 10 (28 now).
The film was entrancing; I even formed a crush on Mark. I just find it interesting that few people know about this film I was able to get a copy of it on VHS from a friend who found it at a Horror Con. I am surprised there hasn’t been a remake. I think it’s hard to come by such a well done psychodrama. I realize that this was a fairly low budget film and might have been even better had it had larger budget however the story comes across very well and the character development of Mark and Anna is really powerful.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a remake of Paperhouse as long as it sticks to the storyline. I’d like to see if money could make this a better film and bring it into the mainstream. Even if there is no remake I would at least like to have Paperhouse on DVD I have never found it available on DVD anywhere.

I am a kindred spirit. I too thought that this movie was wonderful.
I already knew Glenne Headly ("And the Band Played On") and Gemma Jones ("Bridget Jones' Diary", "The Devils" etc.) but I had never heard of Charlotte Burke or Elliott Spears prior to this movie. The chemistry between these two young actors was amazing! It seems a crying shame that neither of these talented persons ever went on to make other movies (Oh, o.k so Elliott Spears apparently featuredin a movie called "Taxandria", but who the heck has even heard of it, let alone seen it?)

reply

I was so glad to read your post; it makes me happy to know I am not alone with my feelings for this film. I decided to look into the film? Elliot Spears made “Taxandria” and found nothing. I thought Charlotte Burke and Elliott Spears were fantastic in Paperhouse and I am surprised that neither of them continued to act in film. My only wish now is that they decide to release Paperhouse on DVD. I have a copy of VHS but I have no idea how long my VCR is going to last and I have to go and get it out of the closet, hook up it just for this film. I do plan to have my niece watch it when she comes over to visit next week and I will post her reaction under the thread about Paperhouse not being appropriate for kids. I don’t expect a problem, I just hope she is able to fall in love with the characters just as I did when I first watched it.
If you ever find Paperhouse on DVD please let me know ! =)

I agree with your post, except for one thing; a larger budget would most likely ruin this film, and rob it of it's character. A small budget simply means that the filmmakers have to utilize art and creativity to get the story across. a remake today would be wretched, all CGI effects and Hollywood style trash. For Paperhouse, it's small budget is the very thing that makes this so special, and so unique.

I have the video somwere.I taped it off the tv almost ten years ago.I love this movie alot

I would love to see a remake, if only to remove a few of the 80s-isms throughout. Like bits of the score that are all synthy, or that corny electric guitar sound effect when Anna's father appears suddenly. Or that whole sequence where the movie suddenly turned into a poor 80's horror film for about ten minutes, I think that could have been done more tastefully. But other than those few nitpicks, it really was a delightful film!

This has become of my favourite films of all time, I was read the original book, Marianne Dreams, by my mum when I was a kid as a bedtime story (not all at once though) and parts of it were quite frightening - the standing stones advancing on the house particularly.

The set of the house was very good, literally like a child's drawing come to life, the Hans Zimmer music fit perfectly in with the theme of the film.

With the right director a remake of the book could be something quite special, especially if the director kept to the storyline and didn't leave any large parts out like what was done with Paperhouse, from what I remember of the book the standing stones were the real meanace not the blind father figure. There was a BBC tv series in the 70s that apparently followed the book more closely than Paperhouse but I've never seen it and don't have much hope of the BBC digging it up for a re-airing or DVD release ever.

I'll have to track down the Marianne Dreams book one day to read again, as well as the follow-up book Marriane and Mark.

Thank you pearshaped!!!!! I had no idea a follow up book on Marriane and Mark existed. Do you know the title?

Yes, it's called "Marianne and Mark" :)

A rare book it seems, over on Amazon.co.uk you can pick up a 2nd hand copy for as little as £28.50 ...! Amazon.com is even more expensive

BTW, a few years ago there was some Muller adverts with a girl who looked the spitting image of a grown-up Charlotte Burke, does anyone else think it's her in the adverts? here's a couple of screencaps of Paperhouse & the Muller Light advert side-by-side:

Thanks again Pearshaped! The girl in the advert definitely looks like young Charlotte Burke. She hasn't changed much it seems.
Cheers!

Living in Canada, I have patiently waited for a region one DVD of this movie to be released. I finally gave up and spent a few hundred bucks on a region-free DVD player and purchased a region 2 (UK) copy of the Paperhouse DVD on Amazon. It sounds like a lot of trouble and expense to go to, but I think the machine will eventually pay off. I also got an Italian DVD of Elio Petri's "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" (the only winner of a Best Foreign Film Oscar that was never released on VHS or DVD in North America).

I've been looking for this film forever. I saw it a couple of years ago on tv, with my mom. We were just flipping channels and came across this movie, and boy I'm so glad we found it!
I can't find it anywhere though, I'm going to see if they have it on amazon or something.

I agree with the person above, a remake of this masterpiece would be terrible. I bet you it would have a bunch of special effects, which would ruin everything lovely about this film, hopefully they never make a remake.

I was lucky enough to watch this for the first time on a great big screen at Roger Ebert's film festival at the University of Illinois. It was a sparkling new print, and the score for the movie sounded amazing in that big theatre.

I've loved this movie ever since then and watch it every year. It casts a really great creepy spell. I would have loved to see this as a young teenager. It's got a great atmosphere, characters we really believe in and like, and good writing that really gets us into the young characters heads.

A successful remake might bring a region 2 DVD out of the wood work. Anyway, in a sense it wouldn't be a remake but another version of the source material.
