Some observations about this and a similar film...

I just now finished watching this, and I have to say this is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen and I pretty much cried through the entire last portion of the film, and I don't cry at movies usually, Im a huge horror fan and have seen just about everything from the sick and twisted to the mundane when it comes to my viewing choices, but I can't remember the last time something touched me so deeply, it is so poignant and heartbreaking, and almost devastating in it's own way, I can't even describe all of the emotions this has left me with. Did anybody else cry? I can't be the only one... I hope Im not the only one.

The story reminded me a little bit of The Four Diamonds, ( a Disney movie based on a true story) both have characters who are sick and using a fantasy world to escape, Anna with her drawing while she is ill with a fever (What caused her to get sick anyways?) and in the Four Diamonds the main character beings to write a story for a school assignment, but he quickly comes to use his writing as a means to escape. The story is set in the times of the nights of the round table while in the real world he battles leukemia. In his story in order to become a true knight he must defeat an evil sorceress and a black knight.

The similarities are there, and I can see parallels between the two, but it is hard to compare them to other movies. While Paper House is a very unique film I want to find others out there that are this good. Has anybody else seen The Four Diamonds? Are there even any films like this anymore?

Although different in style, i found similarities with the more recent film,'Bridge To Terabithia'

http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0398808/

Featuring a boy and girl of similar ages to the leads in Paperhouse,in BTT its the boy who draws and creates a fantasy land populated by 'characters' based on real people in his life.

'Bridge To Terabithia' is well worth seeing. Its a got a couple of strong emotional tugs to it but it doesn't share the bleak / creepy / sinister tone of 'Paperhouse'.

I saw The Four Diamonds, it had that Tom kid from The Sandlot in it. I remember the scenes where he was sword fighting and also getting the treatments (didn't he have some kind of tumor in his sinuses or something?)

Yea, I think so. I remember the scene where they had to rip some tissue out from there to do a biopsy on. I hated that part...
I wish i could find a copy of it, sadly my VHS bit the dust long ago.
