Studio Ghibli's When Marnie Was There thematically similar to Paperhouse
I recently watched Studio Ghibli's faithful adaptation (I read the book afterwards) of When Marnie Was There http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3398268/ and felt it was very similar to Paperhouse.
The main characters in both movies are named Anna, though, of course Paperhouse changed the name from Marianne. If you look at the character design of Anna in Marnie, she is very tomboyish with wavy brown hair. In both original books, Marianne Dreams and When Marnie Was There, the included illustrations both have the main characters with long hair. Both heroines are moody and sickly. They both grow and change by befriending someone in their dreams/hallucinations. Both movies involve a silo like building (originally a windmill in Marnie but changed into a silo because the story was transplanted to Hokkaido Japan).
Because of Marnie, I reread Marianne Dreams, bought the DVDs of Escape Into Night and the Blu Ray of Paperhouse from France. I had actually watched Paperhouse when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
While Marnie is not as dark as Paperhouse, there is still a secret trauma and sense of tragedy and lost in the movie. The original book of Marnie was fantastic and the movie is very faithful to the book despite being set in Japan. I'd highly recommend the movie when it gets released in the west.
